Masquerade (1988) Reviews

Masquerade (1988)
Member Rating:
American-born French film director Bob Swaim directed this sordid tale of greed, deception, machinations and murder. The darkly beautiful Meg Tilly stars as Olivia Lawrence, member of the Hamptons social elite and heiress to a vast fortune, who becomes attracted to dangerous newcomer Tim Whalen (Rob Lowe). She unwittingly falls into his web of deceit, as he and her stepfather (John Glover) plot her murder in order to gain the $3,000,000 in her trust fund. Inspired in plot by the film noir classics of the '40s, Masquerade lacks the style and originality of the originals. The film noticeably lacks suspense; there is no sustained tension, and many of the characters seem included simply for the sake of bizarreness. However, Tilly manages to carry the film all on her own with her considerable talent and natural screen presence. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

Keeping you guessing is this movie's main intent and it does that. It has a soap opera feel to it so I would call it a woman's suspense movie.

About the time you figure this movie out, it changes - It is an 80's movie - with a lot of people who are now stars!

Murder she boat--Riding the comfortable swells of the Hamptons with a well scrubbed supporting cast, Meg "Big Chill" Tilly plays the naive, filthy rich object of a complex murder plot that goes Lady Gaga.

It's a little 80's, but still a good movie.

What do i have to do to buy this movie now i myself loved this movie for years the people that had bad remarks about it did not really understand the love in it or thr mystery about the act at all.

A drab lackluster film masquerading as a mystery. It wasn't mysterious; it was transparent. The leads had no chemistry with each other and no character on their own.
