There's a real murder and a real mystery in Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery, but these plot pegs are used mainly to allow Allen to explore modern urban relationships. Allen plays a N.Y.C. book editor, Larry Lipton, married to Carol (Diane Keaton, who replaced Mia Farrow at the last minute, for reasons well publicized at the time). Carol is a free spirit, ever willing to try new experiences, but Larry is a wet blanket. When it begins to look like a neighbor has killed his wife, Carol is eager to investigate the mystery, but Larry thinks her suspicions are nonsensical and doesn't want to leave his apartment. Undaunted, Carol finds another "Nick Charles" in the form of family friend Ted (Alan Alda), who joins the investigation, and feels attracted to Carol and isn't afraid to let her know. Meanwhile, a writer under Larry's aegis (Anjelica Huston), who feels romantically drawn to him, also decides to join in the fun. Slightly jealous of Carol in the face of her budding relationship with Ted, Larry reluctantly agrees to go along on her clue-hunting expedition -- and it is he who discovers the corpse, who as it turns out was killed after Carol started poking around the apartment building. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I have never been a Woody Allen fan, but after going to see his newest film, Scoop, which was wonderful, I decided to check out Manhattan Murder Mystery, which was highly recommended by a friend. It is indeed a mystery, and unlike most mysteries you encounter these days, it is not overdone with ridiculous contrived suspense moments, or jarring cuts of music to jolt you. It is simply a murder mystery, nothing more, nothing less. The simplicity of the story really allows the characters and each situation to shine through. Diane Keaton and Anjelica Huston are brilliant! It is very entertaining to see these middle-aged women, who otherwise try to appear very composed and put-together, getting all wrapped up in being busy-bodies/amateur sleuths and pretty much getting out of control. This is definitely an easy view, perfect for those odd moods when you just don't know what you want to watch.

Excellent Woody movie with ofcourse Diane as his force de majeur. I watched the Manhattan Murder Mystery twice and found it very funny, great acting and superb story. AAA+++

This is one of his better ones. Humor is not overdone, excellent and lifelike conversation between the main characters. I like to think there are people like this living in NY and keeping the city alive and lively.

If you are a WA fan, you will sit through this one and enjoy it. I bit "long" in places. Brought a few laughs.

Not one of Woody Allen's better ones. Rather silly story line and lacking in the more subtle nuances that Allen is noted for. Diane Keaton is her predictable smarmy self and is becoming boring anymore. Worth watching just to get a baseline from which to gauge other Allen/Keaton works. Kind of an Allenesque re-do of "Rear Window" without Grace Kelly and Alfred Hitchcock (for whom I kept looking to appear in his usual silent cameo)..

This movie is real murder mystery and a comedy. Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Alan Alda and Anjelica Huston are all fabulous. It wasn't until I watched this movie a second and third time until I realized how funny it really is and caught the subtle humor. This has become one of my favorite movies. I never get tired of it.

What can be more fun than being with Woody Allen "on a caper"? Felt like I was with them thorugh-out the film. Wonderful cast with Woody's favorite backdrop - New York City & great jazz music. I enjoyed the direction of this film as much as the story itself. Why oh WHY must Diane Keyton insist on turning her collar up on her blouses and wearing the waistline of her pants all the way up to her neck?! Been doing that for 30 yrs now. That aside, this was a most wonderful example of Woody Allen's best.

This is one of my favorite Woody Allen movies of the 1990's. The cast is great and the story moves along at a good pace.
