Read More Sir Thomas More (Saint Thomas More for Catholics) was one of those rare men who were equally at home in the world of practical politics, so full of petty compromises and dirty deals, and with his demanding conscience. Most of us have to remind ourselves "Do the right thing!" from time to time, but More always knew instantly what the right thing was, and found the courage never to let his conscience down.Great performances by Paul Scofield as More, Robert Shaw as King Henry VIII, and an aging and obese Orson Welles as Cardinal Wolsey. A young John Hurt appears in one of his earliest film roles. A bloody marvellous film! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

What a great display of why so many were be-headed in England while Henry was king. Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

What happens when you act according to good conscience and refuse to take part in their awful games. Such careful dialogue that this screenplay would have made for great reading as well.
Watch this one BEFORE you watch "The Train", whose antagonist might taint your outlook on the protagonist here. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More If you are not a history savy person, like myself, I found this movie to be a must before renting (rerenting) "Elizabeth". It was so exciting to understand this important period of England's history. I understood the historial accounts offered in "Elizabeth" because I watched this movie.
I also found it SO helpful to use subtitles, as the early English slang and accents made it difficult to understand the conversations. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This movie is very beautiful because it shows how much good one person can do when they are uniting their heart with God's. Thomas More did what he thought was right according to his conscience and his story is like Christ's story on earth how being betrayed and humiliated, how being imprisoned with all of the suffering didn't diminish faith. Faith grew and the example goes on for centuries. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I watched this movie on the heels of BECKETT, so my opinion is skewed, but next to Beckett's perfomance by Burton and O'Toole, these men were mediocre, at best. And I question how historically accurate this movie was, since all of my history books portray Henry VIII as quite overweight and not what most would call handsome. Was the fine-looking Henry put in to woo women viewers? Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
