The acting, cinematography, script and plot were all superb. Each "hero" in the story is likeable and yet has another side as well. When do you watch and when do you take sides is the question that runs throughout the story. The extras on the DVD are also great to watch. The featurette, the interviews and the Vietnam timeline are all very interesting and certainly the story, originally by Graham Greene, shows that history can and will repeat itself if we are unable to look at our actions and their consequences. The guy is amazing. Unfortunately, the movie also stars Brendan Fraser. I have never liked Fraser's acting style and I don't ever take him seriously. He just can't keep up in this movie. The story seems a little confused too. Do they want this movie to be about a love triangle? It sure seems like it early. Do they want this movie to be about the war in Vietnam? It sure seems like it in the middle of the film. The balance just isn't there to carry both stories. The movie is only 100 minutes long so there isn't much time to bring both stories full circle. So instead we get an abbreviated story and a conclusion that is told through a montage of newspaper clippings. The movie is engaging and interesting, but when it's over you're left feeling a little unfulfilled. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

We went in to help during the Eisenhower Era. Kennedy continued what Eisenhower started, as did Johnson and Nixon finally got us out. If you're going to defend America, do it properly please. It would help if you knew your history. It's great to patriotic, but don't be blind, too. History is a great tool for learning, and if we don't learn from it we are doomed to repeat it. By the way, I haven't seen the movie yet, but I plan to watch it. I heard it was very good. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More It's a beautiful movie, and though the 'quiet American' performs what seems, in 20-20 retrospect, to be evil deeds in the name of a lost cause--he is still portrayed very sympathetically. His character remains, at the end, a picture of a righteous, very human man who was doing what he truly believed was right. It's a wonderful movie, and I recommend it highly. Read More Another anti-American film were the facts are not allowed to get in the way of the message (Americans=bad / the rest of the world=good). This movie implies that the US committed atrocities against innocent people so that they could blame the communists and evoke sympathy for their own cause. The fact that millions of innocent people were literally slaughtered by the communists even after the US withdrew their forces should, at least, be a clue as to what atrocities might have been committed by the communists even before the US was involved. And why even dig up any of this at this point? The US has normalized relations with Viet Nam. That doesn't seem to be of any interest to this film-maker. It's not even a footnote or an epilog here because that would defeat the purpose of painting a portrait of an 'ugly American'. I foresee this film-makers next project as a film about the American Revolution where the Colonists are viewed as evil opportunists--a sign of things to come. Kennedy started the Vietnam War because he was passionately opposed to communism. In fact, most people are so ignorant about the Vietnam War that they dont even know Kennedy started it. This movie is the type of leftist propaganda that will keep facts like that hidden from you. It is an unbalanced view of the war with 100% bias towards the communists. Kennedy was right to start that war because communism killed a helluva lot more people than that war ever did. He actually started that war to stop the mass murders and spread democracy.
Kennedy was right. This movie is wrong. It is a mean spirited, biased and unfair bashing of Americas fight to spread freedom in the world. To make matters worse, the loser who made this film had to wait to release it for some time after 911 because it was so hateful toward America.
