Lucille Ball stars in this film version of the hit Jerry Herman Broadway musical, which featured an electrifying performance by Angela Lansbury. As Patrick Dennis' plucky and resilient Auntie Mame, Ball's low-pitched, growling moan of a voice (a spine-chilling reminder of the sound of Linda Blair's demon-possession in The Exorcist) and her gaudy and lumbering fashion-horse gait turns Mame into an elderly cross-dresser. In this guise, Mame rehashes the plot from Dennis's novel and the previous non-musical Rosalind Russell film. During the Depression era 1930s, she enrolls her nephew into a liberal private school, tries a turn in show business (with the help of her friend Vera [Beatrice Arthur]), and marries a well-to-do Southern planter (Robert Preston). After her husband's death, Mame concerns herself with her now grown-up nephew, his girlfriend, and the girlfriend's intolerant parents. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I saw the stage version with Angela Landsbury and loved the non-musical film and still think this is a great film! Despite the negative critical synopsis BLOCKBUSTER is using for this, watch this movie. If you love Lucy, you will love Mame. Beatrice Arthur (Golden Girls) nearly steals the movie. This is a fun loving musical camp fest. Most people who review this movie on Amazon - love it. There are a few who don't get Lucy trying to sing. It fit her character and we let her get away with it. Have you ever heard Bette Davis sing? She did once and it was a hoot! Children and mature audiences enjoy this movie alike. Watch Mame!

Lucille Ball gives a memorable perfomance as the eccentric Auntie Mame, Mame is an underrated musical with a great cast and production value. Mame is a highly enjoyable musical , even though Lucille Ball's vocal aren't the greatest it is still fun to watch. When Mame was released in the mid 70s (1974) Broadway musicals had fallen out of fashion with the audience of that era, and were considered old fashion. Critics were brutal and unfair to this movie because many critics were upset that Angela Lansbury who originated the part on Broadway in 1966 did not recreate the title role in the movie version . To Sum it all up fairly Lucille Ball was great as Mame for the movie version and Angela Lansbury was great on Broadway.

Wonderful, musical version of Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell. Lucy never looked lovelier. Absolute fun, and Lucy puts her own style to it.

Lucille Ball does a great job in this movie. As written in another review-although her singing is not the world's best, it suits the character she portrays very well. There aren't too many truly memorable songs in this musical, but they work well to move the plot along. If you watch this for no other reason, watch it for Lucille's beautiful costumes. It was a good evening of entertainment. And I'm happy to have decreased some of my cultural illiteracy by watching this movie. Jane Connell was probably my favorite character. She did a wonderful job in her role. Cathryn

I love Robert Preston but this version is not the best Mame out there. To really enjoy Mame you should see the one starring Rosalind Russell she could carry off that devil-may-care attitude from the book, plus this film is not a vanity project like the Lucy one. Skip this one see Rozz.

I agree that Blockbuster should stay away from negative remarks concerning any movie! Let the viewers decide! And yes, I love this movie. Loved the non-musical as well. So what if Lucille Ball can't sing...she does not have to sing well. She still can sell the songs! And Bea Arthur is a hoot! Campy? Yes! But aren't most musicals??? Rent this movie and relive an era long gone!
