This movie was so interesting my son and I could not turn it off. However it was a sad reminder how people are treated.

Great story of a sad chapter in Irish history. So many lives were quietly dampened and broken by quiet inhumanity. Someday there will be a similar story set in the US about the Church's molestation scandal. Until then, this film and the accompanying documentary stands upright for the young women who were morally shackled by 'polite society' and the religious establishment in Ireland up to the 1970's.

It's been awhile since I sat at home late at night and was able to watch a movie in its entirety without even wanting/needing a snack. Highly recommended.

excellent movie about institutionalised abuse in an Irish convent. It shows the frailty of the human race and the corrupting influence of power. I really empathised with the plight of these young girls and the fact it is a true story makes it all the more poignant. Definitely not a romantic first date movie!

I strongly recommend watching the documentary that is included with the DVD. I usually just watch the movie, but I am glad that I reviewed the documentary supporting the movie.

This is one of the finest films I've seen in a long time. It is incredibly sad and inparticular because all of the characters are based on real life characters and what they went through in these hell-shops run and covered by the Catholic church. The performances are heart-wrenching and perfection. NOTE: The original Documentary about the Magdalene homes is in the special features on the same disc. THIS was what I liked the best. You will see interviewed the actual women (now elderly) that actually went through the events the movie demonstrated. Please do not watch the movie without watching the documentary (about 1 hour long) as well that you'll find in the special features. It just drives it all home even more so.

I don't know the extent to which this movie exaggerates the reality these Irish Catholic women's prisons, but, as one who suffered many nuns during childhood, the portraits of self-righteousness, arrogance, and sadism are sadly all too true. No identifiable stars, but very well cast, written, and acted.
