I had seen the PBS documentary on Frida Kahlo and it left me wanting more, so I rented this movie. Follows Frida's history in a very accurate way and does not take too many liberties to make the story more interesting. Salma Hayek was so moved by the story that she co-produced this in order to get it made and to be the star, you have to admire that! I have to say that this was the best movie she has ever done. Even if you don't have any idea who Frida was, you will be a lover of her art for life after this flick.

I watched this movie to learn more about Frida Kahlo. I had studied her work and knew that she lived a very unhappy life. It definitely kept my attention. I thought Salma Hayek was awesome! Don't let your kids see it, though, not even for the educational aspect. It's extremely trashy and explicit.

BY RYN GARGULINSKI - Anyone who wants to experience pain need only glance at the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Kahlo was able to transform her anguish into captivating art and this film paints an intriguing picture. Although a tad slow at times, the movie is not painful to watch. It is very painful, however, to see what this artist has gone through. Through a bus accident, lost love, five million surgeries, a body brace, a cheating husband, a divorce from the cheating husband, a remarriage to the cheating husband and a host of other maladies, both physical and psychological, Frida lives on. We come to love Frida, as much as we already love her art. Highlight: The surgery scene with animated skeletons dancing around and missing teeth. Lowlight: The nagging question on why all the chicks were so drawn to Diego Rivera. Rating (1-10): 7.92 - MORE REVIEWS ON RYN GARGULINSKI'S BLOG.

Don't get me wrong, I liked this movie and enjoyed Salma Hayek as Frida, I just didn't love it. There seemed to be a real disconnect for me between Frida's pain and her ability to display that pain thru her art. They kept hammering that point throughout the film, but I found it hard to believe that Frida/Salma was really hurting inside and at time I thought the movie played it a little too safe. Beautifully made movie though, with some really interesting camera work from Julie Taymor.

OK, I admit I'm one of those people who had no idea who Frida Kahlo was (you know, an art heathen). Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. In fact, that's why I rented it, to find out. This was excellent. It was beautifully filmed, wonderful acting and dialog. Just great. I just don't get it when I see comments from people like "it was too slow" or "skip it, it was boring". What were you expecting? Guns, explosions, and chase scenes? Some people have the attention span of a mayfly. Go rent Lethal Weapon 14 and knock yourself out.

But aside from that I wasn't that impressed with the story. I think her painting are strange and so now I know it's because SHE is strange. Well, that's just my opinion. Obviously others on here think she's wonderful. I think this is Selma Hayek's best acting so far in her career; she really showed that she can be a dramatic actress. What's with the eyebrows (or should I say eyebrow), I mean didn't they have tweezers back then?
