Salvatore "Toto" returns to his Italian town & home after a 30 year absence for the funeral of a man who served as a father figure to him during his childhood--the town's movie projectionist. Old mysteries are solved as well as old love's re-explored. Heartwarming, funny, and enchanting love story weaved around a trip down memory's lane for movie buffs as well.

The ORIGINAL is enchanting as enchanting gets... not sure about this Director's Cut, though.

As someone who only saw this "new" version, I did enjoy it. It came across to me that this movie was about Toto and how the Cinema Paradiso movie theater shaped his life (as well as the lives of others in the town). Toto's father-son type relationship with the projectionist, Alfredo, was touching, but not overpowering (they both loved each other, but also knew how to manipulate the other to get what they needed). Reading the other reviews, it seems the "original release" focused completely on that father-son relationship. I can see where this version would have been the original focus of the movie - the Cinema Paradiso, itself.

While I believe the acadamy award version is great, it does not detract from the original intent of the director's original idea presented here. - Five Stars

I've not seen this newer version - only the original which is on the B side of the DVD so I CAN review that: This really is a beautiful and quite charming Italian film. A little boy during WWII growing up in a small village in Sicily with his mother & sister. His father is at war and missing. The small movie theater in their town is his (and the towns) only escape from poverty and the war. He befriends the man who runs the projector and they quickly make an impact in each others lives. Beautifully told little story. This movie was made in 1988 and won every possible award it could win around the world, including the Academy award for best foreign film.

The director's cut fills in a lot of unclear plot holes from the original...and raises new intrigue...
