Read More I found myself losing interest. Granted....there are powerhouse performances by everybody....Jake Gyllenhaal (he emotes so incredibly and briliantly acts with his body language and facial expressions); Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon (incredible in this); and the most heart-felt performance....Ellen Pompeo....wow!
But...like I said....even given that, I had to struggle to stay interested. Great story...and it's more than a "story" since it has some real-life subject matter that the director experienced from the death of his girlfried, so I can respect that some of the plot and nuances (Italian phrases stuck on objects) are there for specific reasons and not for entertainment value.
What I found most interesting was watching the movie again with the audio commentary on (the one with the director, Dustin, and Jake). Gives good insight into the behind the scenes decisions that were made, location issues, discussion on certain scenes and extras, etc. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I don't know why this didn't get more attention at box office or at academy award time. This is very well done and acting is excellent by all four lead characters. This takes you right in and you really care about the people involved. Couple of interesting twists. Some unexpected humor considering the sad story line. Enjoyable and entertaining. He didn't have any career goals, nor did he have any personal goals. His best friend died, who was thought to be his fiance. He could not tell her parents the wedding was off, yet he lived with her parents in a toxic situation, taking a job with her father because he didn't have anything else to do, and apparently wanted to please them. It's a wonder their daughter even considered marrying him. During the movie we also discovered that the parents were staying together because of their daughter, and the only reason for the kids to come home was to help the parents' marrriage. This movie had many facets including grief and a trial for the person who killed the girl, but overall, it left a lot to be desired. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
