This is a phenomenally unique movie. Highly recommended for those looking for something truly different.

I guess this movie appeals to people who have a lot going on in their brains all at once, not for those whose thoughts go from A to B without getting side tracked. I actually used it for an example for my teenage daughter about how Donald succeeded while Charlie foundered. I love how the movie ended as though Donald had written the ending, including his own death. Rmember when Charlie asked Donald how he would end the movie? From that point on it was as if Donald was in control. I respect the actors and and Spike Jonze for taking a chance on this it certainly suceeded with this viewer.

My husband never understood the way my mind rambles until we watched this movie. Kauman's writing and Cage's acting really brought to life the thinking process for some of us out here, and that was a really refreshing twist on the typical annoying and lazy voice-over. This is one of the most finely acted, weirdest, and perceptive films I've come across, and it never ceases to amuse.

This is one of those movies that I liked. I was not crazy about, but I liked it. However, I am hard pressed to tell you why I liked it. It is a bizzare journey into the mind of a writer, and the story he is writing. However somewhere the story becomes the writing of the story.

This film is meaningful but flawed. It starts off as a stylish, artsy film but loses its point of concentration at some point because at times the film seems a bit pompous and in love with itself. It does have very good acting from Nicloas Cage and overall is enjoyable but it doesn't reach the level that it was trying to attain.

One usually expects major changes in the adapatation of books to movies, but this one takes it way over the top. Not only does the writer lay his own "I'm making an adaptation and haven't a clue how to do it" story line over the book information, but then he writes an ending that libels real people, making up all sorts of sordid ridiculousness to "make a story." Oh, yeah, and way too much of the f-word. Still, I think the movie is more interesting if you've read the book since you can tell where the book is portrayed and where it leaves off.

This movie reveals the writer's inability to adapt The Orchid Thief to the screen, which he parlays into a movie about the difficulty of writing a successful screenplay framed in the mystical beauty of biological adaptation (of which orchids are a wonderful example). So if you can't write a good screenplay from the book, why not write a screenplay about a stereotypical drunkend screenwriter having trouble writing a screenplay (perhaps an exercise in narcissism for Kaufman), and frame it all in some grandious notion of the overwhelming power of biological adaptation? And get a star like Cage (who can't seem to play anything better than a drunk anyway). This film tries to force feed us themes because Kaufmann obviously couldn't improve on or even adapt at an equal par a good book. It works - by showing us its own failure. Boring and an insult to the book upon which it is based and to the viewer.

I never knew Nicolas Cage would lower himself to such a low rate film. Total loser.

To quote the former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, "Nothing can save Adaptation from Nicolas Cage's crappy acting except the un-crappy acting of Chris Cooper." It's obvious from the beginning that the movie doesn't care about the audience as the lack of story and story cohesion, along with crappy acting only heaps crap on top of crap. Here's how the SAT analogy works for Adaptation: Like a smug artist who insults you for not "getting" his post-modern-nihilistic crap of a painting so is Adaptation to it's audience. 1/2 star for at least having the sense to cast Chris Cooper but only half for casting him opposite the blubbering labia Meryl Streep.
