Read More I do not know how this film escaped my attention for the past 7 years, but now having seen it, I found myself mesmerized by the story, the exquisite photography, the stark and beautiful acting, the thrilling directing and story telling. I couldn't bear to tear my eyes away from the screen. Why it did not receive more accolades and attention in 2001 can only be explained by the fact that we were all caught up in our modern day holocaust - and this time, not a Nazi in sight, but the madness and violence they perpertrated on Europe and the world, found itself alive and well. He also wrote Devil My Care, the latest James Bond book, which was published in 2008. This love story / World War II spy movie was stunningly photographed. People should see the movie for that reason alone. The communist French resistance, the deportation of Jewish children by the criminal Vichy government and their collaboration with Germany were sub-plots that helped moved this piece along. My pet peeve: I believe they should have spoken English, French and German with appropriate sub-titles. Beautiful French countryside and everyone is speaking English? It is a World War II story that takes place mostly in the French countryside. The photography is beautiful and the acting wonderful. It's not a complicated story - just a simple picture of the way things were for a group of people who's lives touched each other during a very frightening time in history. It is a classic tale of good and evil that ends with new beginnings. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful The heroine of this film, Charlotte Gray is exquisitely played by Cate Blanchette as a woman whose romance leads her to assist the French underground. Your heart strings will be tugged at the ways war hurts so many relationships and builds others. A fabulous movie - Highly recommended - especially if you like period pieces and/or WWII. Also see Mildred Pierce from the 40's if you liked this.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
