A woman looking for love finds a man who leads her into a life of crime in this thriller. Carla (Emmanuelle Devos) is a woman in her mid-twenties who works as a secretary in a real estate office. More cute than pretty, Carla is shy by nature, and the fact that she has a hearing problem has made her all the more withdrawn. While she longs for a relationship with a man, she finds herself living vicariously through her friend Annie (Olivia Bonamy), a single parent who dates often while Carla babysits her child. Carla makes the acquaintance of Paul (Vincent Cassel), a rough-hewn small-time criminal who has just been released from prison on parole. While Carla ought to know better, she finds herself strongly attracted to Paul, and Paul responds in kind. But before long, it becomes obvious that Paul is having an influence on Carla's normally stable nature; eager to get even with a co-worker who had wronged her, Carla persuades Paul to steal one of her company's files, which makes things more than a bit difficult for Carla's rival. Carla and Paul's actions go from malicious to seriously criminal when Paul hatches a scheme to rob a nightclub owner to whom he owes money -- a scheme that involves Carla's keen skill as a lip reader. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Very good movie. I found the story and characters interesting. I'm not sure about the purpose of the secondary story with the parole officer but it didn't take anything away from the main story. It isn't full of action but there is a certain tension that pulls along, keeping you watching right to the end. I would strongly recommend this movie, especially to anyone who likes foreign films to begin with.

Vincent Cassel is a chameleon, an extrodinary actor who has the unique ability to create an emphathetic "bad" guy. Interesting premise and good character development.

In spite of the highly improbable and complex plot, I enjoyed this film. It was well acted and as long as you don't ask too many questions, very entertaining.

Terrific character study/thriller about plain looking deaf business woman and her involvement with a sexy small time gangster. Quirky, very tense in an Hitchcockian way, well acted by the two leads, beautifully shot. This may not be deep entertainment (although it has its share of themes and ideas), but it is way more intelligent and involving than almost any of the thrillers made nowadays.

Not sure why this movie was nominated for any awards. It's OK, but really, it's all been done before - and it's not even very interesting. I would say - skip this one.

Although the movie was well filmed, the story has too many unbelievable parts in it. How to get away with hiring a totally incompetent person that only owns one shirt. How can someone live in a studio while the building is still completed around him. How can you read lips from a roof top, interesting enough that people always talk with their faces to the window. Great performance Mdm Devos.....and who was that parole officer??
