The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)
Member Rating:
An orphan grows up to become an Old West legend as the story of the Lone Ranger comes to the big screen in this western saga featuring Christopher Lloyd and Jason Robards. Orphaned as a young boy, John Reid struck up a lifelong friendship with a loyal Indian boy named Tonto. Years later, Reid has become a lawyer and returned to the west in order to ensure that vicious murderers such as the Cavendish gang are brought to justice. Having previously murdered Reid's parents, the Cavendish gang proves that they still rule this lawless land when they launch an ambush that leaves the lawyer serious wounded and his Texas Ranger brother dead. Nursed back to health by his old friend Tonto, Reid dons a mask and sets out to pursue justice anonymously atop his faithful horse Silver. His timing couldn't be better, either, because the Cavendish gang is about to carry out their most ambitious misdeed to date by kidnapping President Ulysses S. Grant (Robards). Upon learning that the president has been abducted by the most violent gang in the Wild West, the Lone Ranger sets out to settle an old score while rescuing the man who will steer the fate of a nation. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The score, written by John Barry is a welcomed addition to this movie. Spilsbury and Horse fill in well as the masked man and Tonto. It also tells the story of how the Lone Ranger came about and chronicles the silver bullet and his beloved horse Silver and their first encounter. If you are a Lone Ranger fan, you'll love it!

Granted some characters are thrown together for Hollywood sake, but considering it's a remake, it's a very good western, Absolutely love this movie and Klinton Spillsbury and Michael Horse did do a good job of acting!

I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid, so I was looking forward to reliving a childhood memory. I wish I could post a review based solely on the content of this movie, but I couldn't get past the horrible quality! First of all, the picture is 4 x 3 instead of widescreen - this is unbelievable for a DVD released in 2008. Second, this seems to have been transfered to DVD from an old VHS tape someone found in their attic - the colors are smeary and washed out, the images aren't very sharp. And third, there are no extras of any kind - no commentaries, no behind-the-scenes, not even trailers - it's just the movie. All of this added up to a horrible viewing experience. I would expect this from DVD's released in the late 90's, not from 2 years ago! As for the movie itself, it's not as good as I remember (of course, I was about 12 when I first saw it), but it's still a decent film. It deserves a better release!

Got cold chills when he put that mask on for the first time and the theme music played!! Spilsbury and Horse were great as the Lone Ranger and Tonto. This was my favorite western as a kid and it did do justice to the original TV series. Now if they would just do a remake of the Cisco Kid.
