The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954) Reviews

The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954)
Member Rating:
Loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story Babylon Revisited, MGM's The Last Time I Saw Paris is a star-studded soap opera, luxuriously lensed by director Richard Brooks. In his last film as an MGM contractee, Van Johnson plays reporter Charles Wills, who while covering the VE Day celebrations in Paris, meets and falls in love with the gorgeous Helen Ellsworth (Elizabeth Taylor). Soon afterward, Charles and Helen are married. Charles supports his wife with a low-paying wire service job, devoting his evenings to writing a novel. After numerous rejections, Charles is more than willing to give up writing and live off the revenue of a Texas oil well in which he'd invested. As he squanders his newfound riches on creature comforts, he loses his literary ambitions and, slowly but surely, the love and devotion of his wife. His self-destructive behavior is halted only by a devastating tragedy. Donna Reed costars as Charles sister-in-law Marion, who carries a torch for him throughout the picture, and Eva Gabor contributes a supporting role. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Enjoyable old film with nice performances by both Johnson and Taylor and an adorable performance by the actress who plays their daughter in the film, as well as by Donna Reed. A classic tear-jerker from the 1950s.

This should have been a magnificent classic movie to experience, and indeed it does begin in a very strong manner, complete with beautiful music. However, then it goes downhill like a led balloon. The script is badly done with endless personal tragedy, betrayal, resentments, etc, etc that become very boring. It is a tad hard to follow as the film skips for no reason. But mostly, it is a film of miserable people mopping about and rank depression which is not my idea of entertainment. Van Johnson, the lead in the film, was a very poor choice in casting. He comes across in a tasteless and bland performance reflective of his natural character in real life. With the non-ending negativity in the film, I found the experience disturbing and very disappointing.

I really enjoyed this movie, the acting was wonderful. What I love about older movies is that they are not so predictable. This movie kept me wondering what was going to happen next. It was a wonderful, heartfelt movie.

What's wrong with you guys? The movie you sent me was "The last time" not The last time I saw Paris. It had the wrong sleeve. Please send the correct one over. Thank you. Aida
