Read More This tale of growing up in a small Texas town is probably not for Gen Y slackers, who will be bored to death by the lack of MP3 players and fast cars. The enormous sexual tensions between the actors, and the incredibly well shot black and white vision of 1950's Texas (what a masterful stroke) make this movie an all time great. It's probably more Shakespearean than modern, it's not a tale of politics, ambition, money or greed, it's a tale of the poignancy and fleeting nature of young love, the gossip of small towns, the sorrow that love always brings, and a masterful performance by Cloris Leachman.
If you like Spiderman and Clerks, go elsewhere. If you can stand two hours of love, hate, sadness, and a vision of Eisenhower era America that is gone forever, this is your film. Bring a handerkerchief, by the end you'll need it. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More 'The Last Picture Show' may be very outdated (it was made in 1971) but that doesn't mean it is not still brilliant. Peter Bogdanovich's character study of the different citizens of a small red-neck town in Texas is still a cinematic delight with solid writing and amazing performances. Timothy Bottoms gives his very best performance as the film's main character, while Ellen Burstyn, Jeff Bridges, Eileen Brennen and a very young Randy Quaid are spectacular. Cybill Shepard does a decent job as the film's heartbreaker, while Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman steal the entire show with their equally powerful and heartwrenching performances that won them both Oscars. If you are looking for a film with good writing, masterful directing and incendiary acting, and don't mind a slow-paced flick, definetley add 'The Last Picture Show' to your to-rent list.
