Yes, the musical numbers might seem tiresome if you aren't into the bollywood genre. But I found myself with an evening alone, and was enchanted by the characters and their plight. Yes, the bad guys were very very nasty and yes, the good guys were oh, so good, but still.....I continue to replay in my mind the song and dance that depicts the jealous lover - marvelous! And the cricket match! Sure, they could have just given us the gist of the drama of the match, but I was agonizing as the scoring by the Brits stretched on and on, and the next day, as the injuries to the home team made it seem hopeless. I'm bored with jaded people and with cynical opinions. I like it when the good guys pull it out in the end. Fantasy is a welcome temporary respite to the realities of the latest body count from Iraq or the recent indictments on Capitol Hill. I say Bravo ! to this film. I thought the music was lovely, the dance numbers fun, and the first 2 thirds of the story enjoyable. I have to admit, though, that I thought it ironic to see the single most boring game ever invented (cricket) so obsessively depicted. Obviously, the game is very important to someone, although I've no idea why.
So, if you like musicals, or movies from India, this one is great. When the Cricket game starts, though, fast forward to the end.

Read More This one is set in times when the British were ruling India. Even though the story is not true, the way the director and writer presents makes it interesting and belivable. The sets are good and the direction is fantastic - much better than most of the bollywood movies available on Blockbuster. The costumes match well with the times and the actors have done a great job. The only negative about the movie is its slow pace and length. Also some of the songs seem out of place and could have been chopped. But hey, it was an academy award nominee so I guess, it must be ok. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
0 out of 4 people found this review helpful Reading the prior reviews on the movie I wonder if they were watching the same film. The plot is a direct rip off of bad News Bears, and we are somehow supposed to believe these farmers in bleached starched clothing and fine jewelry are somehow actually poor. The musical portions are the only part that saves the movie from negative stars. They had me laughing. Given the director was serious with these scenes only questions his sobriety. Save yourself a few bucks, and a waste of time ( I lasted 40 minutes) and forget this abomination. DavidWAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
