Ingrid Bergman, the Swedish expatriate who became one of Hollywood's greatest stars, and Ingmar Bergman, one of the world's most acclaimed filmmakers and Sweden's most honored director, worked together for the first and only time in this intensely personal drama about the troubled relationship between a mother and daughter. Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman) is an acclaimed concert pianist who is visiting her daughter Eva (Liv Ullmann), the wife of a parson in a rural community, for the first time in seven years. While Charlotte and Eva struggle to be civil, there is a deep emotional gulf between them. Eva resents her mother for not caring enough for her as a child, feeling that Charlotte was more interested in her career and her other daughter, Helena (Lena Nyman), who is severely handicapped and can only communicate through inarticulate noises. Charlotte, on the other hand, is uncomfortable with the fact that Helena now lives with Eva, and she is still coming to terms with the emotional devastation of her husband's recent death. Herbstsonate, released in America as Autumn Sonata, earned Ingrid Bergman some of the most enthusiastic acclaim of her career; she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and she won the same honor from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle. It was also her last theatrical release; she would appear in only one more project, a TV movie about the life of Golda Meir, before her death in 1982. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Powerful drama about the profound effect a narcissistic parent has on her children.

The story line was painful to watch and the ending was not resolved. Ingrid Bergman gave her usual great performance and so did Liv Ullman which caused me to give the movie three stars. If you don't mind subtitles and like a thinking drama, this movie is for you.

Ingmar Bergman produced a very few films that contain bits of comedy and romance. But "Autumn Sonata" is not among them! Instead, it is a no-holds barred character study of a deeply estranged mother and daughter. They've kept their differences under wraps for some years, but in one short time period they burst out in a torrent. Ingmar Bergman, Liv Ullmann, and Ingrid Bergman made history with this challenging and unforgettable film. BTW, Ingrid's very last film was "A Woman Called Golda," available on BB.

While I remembered this as an unalloyed masterpiece, I had a few more problems re-seeing it 32 years later. But, in the end, it is a remarkable film, featuring two amazing performances from Liv Ullman and Ingrid Bergman as a mother and daughter desperately hashing out old wounds during a visit paid by the mother, a famous pianist and cold perfectionist. Meanwhile her daughter has clung to old hurts to the point of self-paralysis. A moving testament to the need for forgiveness and growth. But some of the peripheral story elements feel a bit tacked on, and to perhaps stack the deck too easily to one side, particularly a sickly younger sister that Bergman’s character can barely deal with. It’s a minor flaw, since the power of the key confrontations carries the film to the heights (and depths), but I couldn’t help wishing Bergman had trusted us a bit more to work out our own feelings about two complex characters, as he did with "Scenes From a Marriage"

Incredible, moving performances by Liv Ullman and Ingrid Bergman offers a look into whether grown children should confront the pain their parents caused and the inevitable separation that occurs by doing so because of the feelings of guilt.

This was not a pleasant movie to watch since the ending was not satisfying.
