Read More Overlong and melodramatic, this film is in dire need of a good editor. It also lacks sufficient early character development, so that when Madras goes off to join the partisans in defense of his country from the invading Italians and leaves behind Pelagia, his betrothed, we feel uninspired to worry about his safety or to grasp Pelagia's pain at his absence, and have even less reason to identify with her conflicted emotions when she falls in love with Antonio, an Italian Army officer. "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" would have been greatly improved if native actors had been cast to speak in the languages they are supposed to be uttering -- that is, Greek, Italian and German. Almost without exception, the actors recite their lines in English with varying degrees of success in adopting an appropriate accent. This makes the film seem less foreign and that much harder to take seriously, reminiscent of the days when Caucasians were cast to play almost all Asian and Native American roles. Penelope looks fantastic and does a great job acting. Scenery was beautiful. Nicholas Cage's accent was in my opinion terrible and the movie would have been better without it , however, he does a good job in his role so its forgivable. It gives you some history of what was happening in Greece, although this is not told as based on true events. Nicholas Cage is very different in the movie, but enjoyable. Penelope Cruz as wonderful and believable. It is filled with tragedy and love. It shows what the French told of the people of Greece and the distrust. There was a passion in this movie that you feel. Rent it, you will enjoy it. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||
