One major film star referred to director Nicholas Ray as a "loser," because of Ray's alleged willingness to let his more temperamental actors walk all over him. Evidently, Ray had a very compliant and cooperative cast in King of Kings, inasmuch as the film emerged as one of the most disciplined Biblical epics ever made. Jeffrey Hunter is cast as Jesus Christ, delivering a wholly credible performance in this most taxing of roles (never mind the wags who referred to the film as "I Was a Teenage Jesus"). Siobhan McKenna is a radiant if somewhat overaged Mary; Hurd Hatfield offers a properly preening Pontius Pilate; Rip Torn portrays Judas more for the tragedy than the treachery; Robert Ryan (a personal favorite of Ray's) is one of the best John the Baptists you're ever likely to see; and Harry Guardino convincingly interprets Barabbas as a firebrand political extremist. The only false note in the casting is the MGM-dictated selection of teenaged Brigid Bazlen as Salome. The best aspect of the film is its handling of the days after the Resurrection; the "Jesus sightings" are offered as secondhand information, so as to retain some of the mystery inherent in the Scriptures. King of Kings was previously filmed in 1927 by Cecil B. DeMille, with a middle-aged H.B. Warner as Jesus. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie tells a great story about the time of jesus. It has many interesting characters with different viewpoints and shows some scenes not usually associated with the story. The movie shows Judas' life before he meets Jesus and tells how the Roman empire feared Jesus and saw him as a threat to their conquest.

Just the way that you pictured Jesus, Jeffrey Hunter protrays Jesus the best of all others! I love this movie and can watch it over and over again. Although, I haven't seen this version with better sound and on dvd, it can only add to a more uplifting experience! I have watched a hand full Biblical movies, including "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "Ten Commandments", "The Robe", "Barabbas", "In the Beginning" and the "The Bible" is the only one that comes close to this wonderfully mastered movie! "The Greatest Story Ever Told" included some details that weren't in the other movies, plus John Wayne as the Roman Centurion added a special touch. Still, "Kings of Kings" is my favorite Bibical Movie!

V ery good moview, and Jeffrey Hunter plays Christ very well. He has a calmness that I find believable, and this movie was very well done. He was also Jesus's age which was an excellent consideration in choosing this actor. Too Bad he died so young at 42 yrs of age. I would have loved to see him mature in other roles as he grew older.

A "perfect" depiction of Jesus. It is a very good movie, a bit slow at times. Great family film.

Another great movie: Once again, I believe that this as more accurate account of recorded history. Other Reviews: +++++ The Greatest Story Ever Told - I believe that this as more accurate account of recorded history. **** The Passion of The Christ - Capitalizing on a generations' lust for gore, this movie has little dialogue and is bloodier than it needed to be. But it still depicted the reality of how Jesus unjustly suffered at the hands of mankind. **** The Life of Brian- This is a comedy about a fictitious character that is crucified during the times of Jesus. It was clearly designed to be a hilarious joke, and not a twisted interpretation of History. +++++ Jesus of Nazareth - I enjoyed this movie very much. +++++ Jesus of Nazareth - I enjoyed this movie very much.
