The picture starts off as an amusing portrait of an eccentric but pathetic loser, but by the end, it turns into a dark, unsettling commentary on fame. It's not Scorsese's best, but it's a good picture. Lewis, DeNiro, and Bernhard are all good, and the film is very amusing, not because of the jokes (they're purposely hokey), but because of the interaction between the characters. Scorsese decided to film this picture in 1980; the next year, Reagan was shot by a deranged man, supposedly "inspired" by "Taxi Driver." In that context, the final scenes of the picture seem all the more unsettling, a sharp indictment of celebrities created by misguided curiousity and the media.

Really, this is one of my favorite movies, one of those films that I watch anytime I'm flipping through the channels and see it. DeNiro is great in this film, as is berhardt...a dark comedy about a hopelessly unfunny Rupert Pupkin. Try it just to see DeNiro spreading his wings a little bit. Vastly underrated...try it, you'll like it!

this movie is more realistic than most reviewers realize. Having tried and failed at stand-up. I find it easy to believe (tragically) that an aspiring performer/schizophrenic could be that delusional. Never under estimate the power of denial. Contrary to one reviewer, DiNiro's character happens to be extremely funny as a stand-up in the final scene. It took the movie from, comedy to tragedy, to, tragedy to comedy, no punn intended. this movie kicks ass

I've never seen Jerry Lewis play such a strait role, scary. De Niro is good but annoying most of the time(kind of like a gnat that you swat at repeatedly), especially when he does his stand up comedy bit, it's painfull to watch. Bernhard's character is completly psychotic(like always). The film is masterfully done but just a tad slow for my taste, one of Scorsese's weakest films. -Stone

Disappointing. Great actor lineup. Big name director. But a very slow movie and not really funny. A nice ending, but it felt like it took forever to get there.

I went in to this movie knowing the slow pace of a Scorsese/DeNiro movie, but this was a little too slow. It was interesting to see how crazy DeNiro's and Bernhardt's characters were, but it felt like this was the only purpose of the movie. The directing and acting were superb, but the movie dragged on and was boring to sit through. This is Robert DeNiro's worst movie.
