Emma Thompson gives a realistic portrayal of Vivian Bearing, a woman who is suffering from ovarian cancer. I wasn't expecting the drama to be handled in the way it was--Vivian speaking directly to the camera in many scenes. But this method gives the viewer a better picture of what she is going through and thinking. The movie portrays the physicians as rather dispassionate characters who are more concerned with their research than with their patients. But Vivian finds comfort in the compassionate care of Susie, her nurse, played by Audra McDonald. Worth watching.

Not a film to see if you do not want to listen and think. But if you do? Then this is the film for you. She asks many important questions, but like any good teacher she does not give answers, we must find them ourselves. If you cannot listen you will sleep through some important questions and thoughts.

Wit is one of the best play adaptations. For those of you who have read or seen the play, this film will not disappoint you. Emma Thompson's performance of Vivian is excellent. The primary nurse (Audra MacDonald) and the doctors (Christopher Lloyd and Harold Pinter) could have added more demension to their characters. Ultimately, this movie is excellent, which is why it's worth 4 stars.

This movie was my main inspiration for wanting to become a nurse. Especially after watching how the doctors behaved toward the woman (Emma Thompson) in this movie. A real tear-jerker; especially the ending, when Professor Ashford reads "Runaway Bunny" to her. A must see!

Watching this film was such a rich and intimate experience. Although most of the film is a simple narrative, the character development and dialogue is so well done and believable that you feel like you are there watching the events unfold in real time between real people. It is so rare to watch a film and not be distracted by actors and sets and dialogue and this and that. If you don't want to watch a movie about a woman dying of cancer you should skip it.....but it is just such a beautiful and well done movie experience it would be a shame to miss it.

An exquisite movie; one which not enough people, I suspect, will appreciate. I do have one dilemma however. I wonder if the character of V. Bearing would have been so endearing to me if she were an American. The British aspect is so charming to many of us on this side of the "pond" that it is difficult to judge what effect that had on me. Nevertheless, the performances, script, and of course the poetry were superb. A must see for anyone who likes an intelligent movie.

Emma Thompson does a good job in this Mike Nichols film that takes a very hard look at one woman's journey through chemotherapy treatments for ovarian cancer, the less than perfect doctor/patient relationship and facing her own mortality. Harsh subjects done wiith what this is mostly about and that is human dignity.
