Although some have reviewed this film as a Pagan vs. Christian morality play, it seems more of a love story: a tale which clearly illustrates the innate human love for freedom and expression. The mystical elements of the wind and the `Daykeeper' role of the Chocolatier(from Mayan culture)can be understood as the yearning of each of our souls to be free to be who we are and express that self without fear. That the context of the film involves the more puritanical aspects of Christianity is, I think, not a slap at Christianity itself but, rather, at those who interpret the faith along very narrow lines and deny the beauty and satisfaction which God has clearly taken great joy in laying out for us to engage in. A great film with many layers of meaning which unfold with each watching. Highly recommended.

...Not to mention beautiful actors! And by this I mean physically as well as just plain talented. It's a great story about a woman who can't seem to settle down, but then finds the loves of her life (a man, a town she finally belongs in, her daughter's happiness) and settles down. It's refreshing to see that struggle in a woman. This movie brought happy-tears to my eyes twice and I enjoyed it very much!

Johnny Depp has the knack for being in "unusual" films, this one included. A French town is invaded by a supernaturally-driven chocolatier, who is there to bring balance to the puritanical ideology promoted by the Count-mayor. The plot was interesting, but a bit predictable (therefore only 4 stars). I did not find the movie particularly anti-religious...both the Count and the candymaker "failed" in some way. The message may be more to live the golden mean...nothing too extreme. Anyway, the acting was great...you see Johnny morphing into Jack Sparrow for a few minutes while playing the vagabond river rat romantic hero. Good for a night at home for those who like to see Johnny and a happy ending.

I kept waiting for this movie to get better and it never did. I really didn't like the theme of this movie and although I am not Catholic (which was the religion portrayed in the movie) I thought it was a very anti-Christian movie.
