The Italian Job (1969) Reviews

The Italian Job (1969)
Member Rating:
The quintessential British caper film of the 1960s, The Italian Job is a flashy, fast romp that chases a team of career criminals throughout one of the biggest international gold heists in history. Michael Caine is Charlie Croker, a stylish robber and skirt-chaser just out of British prison. Shunning rehabilitation for recidivism, Croker takes over "The Italian Job," a complicated plan to hijack gold bullion from Italy -- right from underneath the noses of the Italian Police and the Mafia. The job, whose original mastermind was murdered, clearly requires the sponsorship of a richer, more established criminal than Croker. He turns to the auspices of the eccentric Mr. Bridger (Noël Coward in his last film role), a suave, regal, incarcerated English crime boss with a peculiar fascination with the Queen. Bridger provides Croker with a quirky group of Britain's most infamous computer hackers (including a lascivious Benny Hill), bank robbers, hijackers, and getaway drivers -- the ex-con is soon well on his way to relieving Italy of the gold. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, Rovi

It is a decent movie, well maybe an OK movie but I like the remake much better.

Not really my bag, but Michael Caine was hot in this and the red white and blue mini-coops all over the place were fun. Benny Hill was a nice garnish to this old movie.

Movie was OK, rather dated and kind of a silly comedy.

Unfortunately we saw the remake before this one. It is fun seeing how much of the original was incorporated into the 2003 version. Also impressive are the chase seens. But, unfortunately the ending leaves a bit to be desired. Good to watch if you like seeing where a remake came from.

Shallow character development, unrealistically instant communications between continents in the age before cell phones, and the cars and bus defied the laws of physics given that they were supposedly loaded with tons of gold. I also agree with the other reviewers: the ending was abrupt, never resolved, and probably resulted in many popcorn boxes and soda cups being thrown at the screens in theaters back in 1969. Another Micael Caine film, "The Fourth Protocal" also ends like this one - as if the writing staff went on strike twenty pages before the end of the script and never came back before the end of shooting to resolve all of the plot lines. It's not a waste of time, but expect the production quality and editing to be on par with most British films from the late sixties and early seventies.

I rented this thinking it might be like the newer version. It was cute but had nowhere near the depth and action that the later version has. Just rent the new one...

Never got a chance to see it. Always got the wrong movie twice. Ordered it twice, got the remake back twice. Terrible service. Are they clueless.

Dumbest ending I can ever remember in a movie.
