The Island (1980) Reviews

The Island (1980)
Member Rating:
The Island, a turgid action drama directed by Michael Ritchie, revolves around the adventures of Maynard (Michael Caine), a newspaper reporter who tries to solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. Maynard, and his son crash-land on a remote island ruled by a gang of pirates who kill anyone who intrudes there. From beginning to end, The Island is slow, uninvolving and very bloody. The terrible script by Peter Benchley, who also wrote Jaws, is jagged and the dialogue is cliched. The film was an economic disaster and is only of interest because of a good score by Ennio Morricone. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

Peter Benchley seen it in Jaws and so did the world, ironically the cast Shroder,Dryfuss, even Spielberg had there doubts about the film, not the writer!!! The Island is the exact same...Benchley is brilliant... Michael Caine delivers as he always has, the cast was beautiful the acting was superb, the directing production the story the film... Is a must see...

This is a great movie! Whoever wrote the description for this one got it wrong. This is one of those movies that gets better with age. Get some popcorn, turn out the lights and enjoy! Somewhat bloody but not too bad by todays standard.

See this on VCR or DVD, if it ever copies. This one will have the thriller and killer audienced quenched 1/3 of the way in... Must see it!

John M. Excellent action movie. A little slow the first 20 minutes as you are introduced to the father and son relationship but then it takes off and becomes a gripping and exciting action thriller. An implausible yet fasinating storyline, good acting by Caine, Warner, and co-stars. A very graphic and violent movie for the times I am surprised that in this day and age it hasn't become a "Cult Classic". I highly recommend it.
