Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000) Reviews

Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000)
Member Rating:
The personal lives of five exotic dancers go under the microscope in this drama, the first American feature from director Michael Radford. Eddie (Robert Wisdom) is the manager of a strip club in suburban California known as the Blue Iguana, where he keeps an eye on the women who make their living dancing for his customers. Stormy (Sheila Kelley) is an attractive, thick-skinned woman who is getting old enough to realize her days as a dancer may be numbered. Jo (Jennifer Tilly) likes to think of herself as the Blue Iguana's star attraction, though her career may hit a detour now that she's learned she's pregnant. Angel (Daryl Hannah) is a sweet, but immature woman, who tries to deal with her fear of being unloved by adopting a child. Jasmine (Sandra Oh), an aspiring poet, tries not to get settled into a career as a stripper, while being encouraged in her writing by coffeehouse owner Dennis (Chris Hogan), who features spoken word performers. And Jesse (Charlotte Ayanna), the youngest of the performers, expresses her desperate need for approval in her desire to please the customers. Dancing at the Blue Iguana received its world premiere at the 2000 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I first ordered this movie with only one thing in mind, girls. I had no idea there was such a great message about life, dreams, and goals; and that everyone, no matter what situation they might be in, should have the opportunity to make something of themselves. I highly recommend the movie. A+ all around!!!

If you have any desire to know what it's like to be an exotic dancer (nice word for stripper), watch this movie! It is a very realistic portrayal. The characters in this movie from the dancers to the customers to the club owner and manager as well as the club itself are very real. The drama, the drugs, the personalities, the motives, all of it is astoundingly accurate.

I think this movie has been misunderstood my many people. It was pretty much all improvisational. I do recommend watching the DVD extras. All the characters I felt were well acted out- Daryl Hannah was really funny- as was Jennifer Tilly. This was the first movie I ever saw Sandra Oh in. Quite a gem in my opinion.

Great!!! The movie shows that the power that the dancing threatens to have over the women, but that these women have passions, lives, and ultimately want to get OUT of the business. The movie tries to portray a dark side of the business, although I don't think it does an excellent job of that. Had a hard time getting immersed in the movie, due to the improv storylines and characters.

The characters in this movie may have accurately portrayed life in a strip club, however there was no real plot or storyline so we were totally bored by the movie.

Don't let the title fool you. This isnt just a movie about strippers. I'ts so much more. I was never a big fan of Daryl Hannah until now. Her charm and exquisite acting skills come through in this movie and it's her best work to date. Jennifer Tilly is amazing. The characters are all so easy to fall in love with and the acting (a lot of the movie is improvised I understand) is outstanding. I loved this movie and recommend it to anyone who wants to see a great comedy that also grabs your heart.

But several naked women who can actually act up to B movie quality. The script could use some work and the photography was fuzzy and choppy but otherwise not too bac.

Story line was horrible. It was all over the place. There was no aspect of the movie that drew me in and kept me watching.
