In Cold Blood (1967)
Member Rating:
Richard Brooks wrote and directed this stark black-and-white (with brilliantly evocative cinematography by Conrad Hall) study of two drifters who murder a family, based on Truman Capote's non-fiction novel In Cold Blood. The film takes place in Holcomb, Kansas, where four members of the Herbert Clutter family are roused from their sleep and brutally murdered. The killers, Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and Dick Hickock (Scott Wilson), are two ex-cons who plan to rob the Clutters of $10,000 kept in a safe in their home. But Dick and Perry find no safe and no $10,000 and end up leaving the murder scene with only $43. The police, led by Alvin Dewey (John Forsythe) of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, try to track down the killers. Meanwhile, Dick and Perry take off to Mexico, where Perry has fantasies of prospecting for gold. But when his dreams of prospecting come to naught, Dick insists that they return to the United States. Confident that they have left no clues, they cash bad checks, and the police track them down in Las Vegas. During questioning, their alibis are broken when they are separated and tell conflicting stories. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This is a very good movie. I remembered watching it as a young kid, and I always remembered one part of the ending. A few years ago, I ran across the book at a garage sale and read it. Now, a couple of years later I've seen the movie again. For a movie in the 60's, and filmed in black and white, it's still a thriller.

Robert Blake was great in this movie. This is definitely a classic worth getting it was really a thriller that my mom and elder family members have seen and enjoyed and now I can say the same.

Really good movie. Follows the book precisely. Well acted and well filmed. Was probably ahead of its time, although it had a few continuity issues.(For example, models of vehicle were filed in background shots which were not available in the time period on film.) Other than that, no issues. Robert Blake did a great job.

This is the original....very hard hitting movie. It was shot in 1967 with the action taking place in the late 1950's. Listening to the way everyone talks, cops smoking while on a crime scene, the cars they drive (valuable antiques today) make this really interesting. Scott Wilson and Robert Blake are superb as two out of control hoods. Since this movie was the inspiration for Capote, there are many parallels but it's still a disturbing film. Filmed during a period when the justice system actually worked. A little long but worth every minute.

After returning this defective DVD I could not find to report this. This DVD freezed so many times in only 20 minutes that the viewing was terminated.

Looks great in blu-ray. This film is a character study of the two damaged, psychopathic men who commit an utterly sensely multiple murder. Fascinating.

Good for the most part but mostly what you'd expect. Not particularly stellar acting but not a bad watch

A VERY hard movie to watch - as the horrible lives of two young men come to a brutal climax as they kill an entire family....then both end up on the end of a rope in the end. This movie is a "24-7" downer movie....and it's tragic how two terrible childhoods end up causing two men to become pathetic "Poor White Trash", and ultimately a menace to society as a whole. But what I absolutely DID love about this movie was attention to detail about the era being portrayed...the soundtrack to the late 1950's jazz and beatnik music was brilliant and black and white "look" to this 1967 movie really help sell it. Robert Blake (a total neurotic in real life) did a wonderful job being..."neurotic"...a roll he totally understood and knew first-hand. Again - tragic movie that was very depressing throughout....but nonetheless, a very good movie.

Brilliantly made for its time. But it is a real downer.
