But I could not get into this film for some reason. I think the actress cast as Georges Sand was not as realistic as she could have been because Georges had "something" that all the men loved her for, and the men of my household couldn't buy it in this flick. As the other reviewer said, the setting was great - lots of opportunity for imagination there. I suppose my standard for a period picture includes
"Sense and Sensibility" or "Pride and Prejudice" and this one did not reach 1/2-way up the scale. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

3 out of 4 people found this review helpful This is not a family movie due to some vulgarity and quite a bit of profanity. However, it was great fun to watch. There were splendid duels to the death at sunrise, and Hugh Grant does a fairly decent job at playing the frail nervous composer plagued with coughing fits. The events of course, are fictional, but you get the idea of what it would be like if the big wig Romantic Era geniuses (like Lizst, Chopin, Delacroix and George Sand) all got together for a fortnight under the same roof.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Now i think that's too harsh. It is, however, the worst period film I've ever seen. that is certain. the plot is ridiculous, the acting - despite the presence of a few good actors - is dreadful. Spare yourself the pain and torment that is sitting through this movie and get something else! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More only very loosely can we call this historical fiction. It's a movie about art, really -- draws on historical figures for its archetypes, & uses its title to draw us to the issue. What is spontaneous expression, and what has that to do with art? What is art for, if not to teach us how to live? We & our desires are saddled with the ballast of overdetermined responses, socioeconomic constraints, failures of imagination, & the hubris of Icarus. Nonetheless, art, its patrons, & its laborers carry on . . . flawed, but occasionally inspired, at best to the sublime. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
