The first part of the movie comes on a single disk - you need the second disk to see Part 2. Part 1 was nostalgic and fun to watch, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get Part 2 through Blockbuster. It's a lot of movie to sit through to only see half. Read More Quite spectacular for its day, replete with Sixties kitsch (as is only proper). If you are the right age, you will be thrilled by the cast--so many of the giants of their time. There very few stars today who can fill their shoes. And the music--absolutely marvelous; worth the price of the movie all by itself. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

The rest of the movie is on Part 2 which is not availble through Blockbuster.com. Sad that Blockbuster did not manage to get the Part 2 DVD. Might as well not even have Part 1 if Part 2 is not available. It ruins the entire movie to not know what happens in the end! I do not recommend you rent this movie. It was a "Cinemascope" format, which has the video on the screen distorted. It was tall at the left and right edges and narrow in the middle.
DISC 1 was GREAT! Loved the movie! The entire movie was on the Blu-ray DISC 1. This DISC 2 is USELESS!!!

Read More "How the West Was Won" (1962) is the story of Western migration from one family's viewpoint. The film is divided into three segments, directed by John Ford, George Marshall ("Destry Rides Again," "When the Daltons Rode"), and Henry Hathaway respectively. The segments explore various tensions in Western history: (1) mountain men vs. permanent settlers, (2) Indians vs. railroad builders (and the townsfolk who settled in the railroad's wake) and (3) lawmen vs. gunfighters.
The filmmakers had a good idea, but they executed it poorly. In my mind, what stands out about "How The West Was Won" is that Indians hardly appear and blacks don't appear at all. I'd love to see a Western family saga like this made today--only with a family that's American Indian, or black or Chinese, or part of some other group that, according to Hollywood, doesn't merit much attention in Western history.
