Read More I was recommended "Eyes Without A Face" from a good friend of mine, and after constantly being pushed down my queue, I finally got around to watching it. For an 87 minute movie, the audience is subjected to the horrors that one father would go through in order to restore balance to his deformed daughter's life. But as one continues to watch the events unfold it becomes curious whether the crimes he is committing is in the name of his daughter or for his own aspirations.
Essentially, "Eyes Without A Face" is about a father (doctor) who specializes in skin grafting. After the car accident his daughter was involved in, he decides to replicate her former face by stealing it from other woman. For a 1960 horror movie, the deformations created by the doctor are quite graphic. It is definitely a film that questions our own willingness to restore the status quo. All-in-all outright borefest? Yes. Perhaps ... Read More After reading the synopsis and the review's, I decided to give this horror-classic a chance in my DVD player... Atmospheric? Yes. Somewhat "haunting"? Yes. All-in-all outright borefest? Yes. Perhaps I was just too tired to really appreciate the film for what it is. I liked the idea of the story, but the story moves along slower than winter-cold molasses. I caught myself nodding off to sleep many times only to shake myself awake and realize that not only had I not missed a thing, but that the story was still in the same place it was prior to the doze. Or perhaps my hopes were just too high for this classic disapointment. Whichever the case, I'd probably only rent this if I'd rented everything else already. Read More Right up there with highly acclaimed thrillers like Psycho and The Exorcist is the more obscure "Eyes Without a Face", equally as frightening as the former. However, unlike Psycho, which has lost quite a bit of its shock value with modern viewers, this movie is just as horrific as it was over 40 years ago. Read More If you love classic b/w horror films then this one is for you. Fans who see this for the first time have to remember that it was made in 1960 and is not in the vein of Jason or Freddie. A father trying to save the face of his once lovely daughter; going beyond the bounds of medical ethics. The scene where he removed the whole face is great. You feel for his daughter who just wants to die due to the disfigurement from the car accident. I found the video to be crisp and clear. I wonder about the history of the house/castle where the film was shot. You know how many liver/kidney/lungs, etc transplant patients go through the same rejection as the daughter goes through. Once there is hope and then it slowly fades away. Anyway, I found this to be very enjoyable; no ghosts or goblins here but the story is still scarey just the same. ~ Susan L. Read More The horror in this film is intellectual not visual, so if you are looking for horror that jumps off the screen at you with a lot of Blood, screams and loud music, you won't find it here. Certainly the disfigurement of a young girl's face is horrible, whether by car accident or by deliberate evil of a physician, stealing a face for a face. But the real horror here is the cold precision of this brilliant surgeon who methodically kidnaps young women to disfigure them by stealing their faces. His philanthropic purpose? To restore his own daughter's face. He has no regard for the misery and death he leaves in his wake. I was taken by the pleas of the father of a missing girl, desperate to find his daughter. BUT VERY SLOW ITS TRUE!

The black and white picture really creates a contrast and highlights the terror. Certain scenes are etched in my memory forever; like the mask Christiane has to wear is very startling. the actual facial removal surgery, and the blurry but frightning look at Christiane's unmaked face. Great stuff. You also have a story that brings into question the motives of the Doctor Génessier. Is he committing these acts because he wants to help his daughter or is it for the personal gain of his work. it's really quite brilliant. Everyone should see this movie.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? I can guarantee that if you exactly reproduced this movie today, you would never get another directing job. The premise is interesting, but it fails on all other counts.
