Eyes Without a Face (1960)
Member Rating:
French director Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face (Les Yeux Sans Visage) is an unsettling, sometimes poetic horror film. Pierre Brasseur plays a brilliant plastic surgeon, Prof. Genessier, who has vowed to restore the face of his daughter, Christiane (Edith Scob), who was mutilated in an automobile accident. With the help of his assistant (Alida Valli), he kidnaps young women, surgically removes their facial features, and attempts to graft their beauty onto his daughter's hideous countenance. This naturally has an adverse effect on the "donors," some of whom commit suicide rather than go through life faceless. Franju's haunting, muted handling of basic horror material is what lifts Eyes Without a Face out of the ordinary and into the realm of near-classic. When the film failed to draw crowds under its original title, however, the distributors decided to exploit it as a two-bit "scare" flick with the new title The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustus. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

this movie was waaaaay ahead of it's time. I was shocked to see some of the things that were in the movie becuase of it being older...this movie had to have been somewhat shocking to audiences back when it came out. At the same time, it was very sad and very beautiful.

After reading the synopsis and the review's, I decided to give this horror-classic a chance in my DVD player... Atmospheric? Yes. Somewhat "haunting"? Yes. All-in-all outright borefest? Yes. Perhaps I was just too tired to really appreciate the film for what it is. I liked the idea of the story, but the story moves along slower than winter-cold molasses. I caught myself nodding off to sleep many times only to shake myself awake and realize that not only had I not missed a thing, but that the story was still in the same place it was prior to the doze. Or perhaps my hopes were just too high for this classic disapointment. Whichever the case, I'd probably only rent this if I'd rented everything else already. A part of me feels guilty for the poor rating, but I really couldn't give it anything else.

Right up there with highly acclaimed thrillers like Psycho and The Exorcist is the more obscure "Eyes Without a Face", equally as frightening as the former. However, unlike Psycho, which has lost quite a bit of its shock value with modern viewers, this movie is just as horrific as it was over 40 years ago. A beautifully paced film essential to anyone who appreciates the art of suspence and horror.

If you are a true horrow fan you will love this movie. It is original and scary. It is truly a masterpiece.

The horror in this film is intellectual not visual, so if you are looking for horror that jumps off the screen at you with a lot of Blood, screams and loud music, you won't find it here. Certainly the disfigurement of a young girl's face is horrible, whether by car accident or by deliberate evil of a physician, stealing a face for a face. But the real horror here is the cold precision of this brilliant surgeon who methodically kidnaps young women to disfigure them by stealing their faces. His philanthropic purpose? To restore his own daughter's face. He has no regard for the misery and death he leaves in his wake. I was taken by the pleas of the father of a missing girl, desperate to find his daughter. BUT VERY SLOW ITS TRUE! Check Faceless-1989, Same movie?

Still as effective now as it was fifty years ago. It's worth the slow pacing if you "get" it. Fear is temporary. Despair never fades. That's what real horror is made of.

Considering this movie was filmed in 1960, I'm sure it was quite shocking. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie - it was nice to watch a movie that didn't have to show lots of violence to unnerve you. There is one scene that looks incredibly realistic - cutting off one person's face - it really looked real! The haunting eyes of the daughter follow you. I loved the ending too!!!

Eyes Without a Face is a movie way ahead of it's time, but also benefits from the time it was released. The black and white picture really creates a contrast and highlights the terror. Certain scenes are etched in my memory forever; like the mask Christiane has to wear is very startling. the actual facial removal surgery, and the blurry but frightning look at Christiane's unmaked face. Great stuff. You also have a story that brings into question the motives of the Doctor Génessier. Is he committing these acts because he wants to help his daughter or is it for the personal gain of his work. it's really quite brilliant. Everyone should see this movie.

Reminded me of uncle Frank in Hell Raiser. Seemed a little drawn. A bit storybook, but that is what makes it a classic.

This movie really sucks. I don't know what everyone else was watching. I guess it's hip to like this dated, boring, predictable, cliche-ridden, "horror" "classic", because it's French. I can guarantee that if you exactly reproduced this movie today, you would never get another directing job. The premise is interesting, but it fails on all other counts.
