Bill Murray plays Phil, a TV weatherman working for a local station in Pennsylvania but convinced that national news stardom is in his grasp. Phil displays a charm and wit on camera that evaporates the moment the red light goes off; he is bitter, appallingly self-centered, and treats his co-workers with contempt, especially his producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliot). On February 2, 1992, Phil, Rita, and Larry are sent on an assignment that Phil especially loathes: the annual Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, PA, where the citizens await the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who will supposedly determine the length of winter by his ability to see his own shadow. Phil is eager to beat a hasty retreat, but when a freak snowstorm strands him in Punxsutawney, he wakes up the next morning with the strangest sense of déjà vu: he seems to be living the same day over again. The next morning it happens again, and then again. Soon, no matter what he does, he's stuck in February 2, 1992; not imprisonment nor attempted suicide nor kidnapping the groundhog gets him out of the loop. But the more Phil relives the same day, the more he's forced to look at other people's lives, and something unusual happens: he begins to care about others. He starts to respect people, he tries to save the life of a homeless man, and he discovers that he's falling in love with Rita and therefore wants to be someone that she could love in return. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

..with the possible exception of the Woody Allen classics (and maybe Raising Arizona, Spinal Tap). Maybe not my favorite comedy of all time, but definitely in my Top 10, emminently rewatchable, and hits all the right notes. Interestingly, I tend to think of this movie around Christmas, even though it takes place on another holiday (I suppose it's the winter setting, as well as the movie's themes). Bill Murray is at his quirky, irreverant best, and Andie MacDowell is great opposite. The various townspeople provide a welcome, colorful backdrop. I heard it said that guys tend to like this more than women, but I really don't see any particular reason why this should be so (i.e. this isn't a "guy humor" movie). Definitely family friendly, and worth watching if you haven't seen it.

This movie was more than a comedy. I watch this when I'm down in the dumps, or need to take a look at how I'm living my life. Almost anything with Bill Murray in it is top-notch. See "Razor's Edge."

...but then, that's kind of the movie in and of itself. This is one of Bill Murray's best movies... and it's a lot of fun!

I have to agree with what others have said here. Don't want to put people down who don't like it. They are certainly entitled to their opinions. But enjoying this takes a certain ability to just allow the movie to happen. Murray and MaCowell are as good as they ever are. Over all the acting is average. The comedy is pretty sophisticated at times; not so much in others. The story is very intriguing though. On one level it's just a light comedy. On another level it's very deep. If you can interact with it, you'll like it. If you need something in your face that takes you on a thrill ride, you should look somewhere else. Again, don't want to offend, but there is a good chance anyone under the age of 21 might just be too bored. So beware.

What appears to be a simple innocent comedy turns into so much more. Never would I have expected SUCH a good movie to evolve out of what starts off as a dry comedy. The movie has great humor, emotional depth, and great acting by Bill Murray and the rest of the cast.

If you are not absolutely thrilled with this hilarious and deadly serious tale of human redemption, see your shrink. If you are not blown away by the drop dead gorgeous Andie MacDowell, clean your glasses. Something for everybody in this modern day morality tale with a playful cover. Merits repeated viewing and should be an annual tradition. Bill Murray almost reaches Robin William's knack for combining the sublime and the ridiculous. Run, do not walk, to add this to your collection.

This is a funny, reflective movie about getting life right! It's a classic that should be carried in every store, which it isn't...
