I am skeptical that people in 1776 truly acted the way the actors portrayed the characters. For example, one of the quotes when Benjamin asked if he could sit next to his sister-in-law was "It's a free country, at least it will be". There was a lot of "lightness" in the movie juxtaposed along with war - didn't feel right. Heath's Australian accent kept coming through while Mel's didn't. The fight at the end, hand-to-hand between villian and goodguy, was corney and I knew by 3/4 of the way through the movie that it would happen. Pretty predictable.

One of my all time favorite movies. Being somewhat of a history buff this story leads you through some of the trying times of the revolutionary war. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has an interest in that period of our history. The violence is very graphic and not for young children but the storyline is excellent. I agree that it is somewhat of a tearjerker.
