Read More First and foremost, I love The Patriot as a great story with fantastic characters. I love the family story, the political story, the story of personal redemption, and of course the historic story. There is great action, some humor, and high emotion. In the end, it is a triumph and very inspirational. As a history teacher, I caution that the story is a conglomeration of characters and events, based on actual events, but not specifically accurate. Benjamin Martin (Gibson) is based loosely on the real-life Francis Marion, but there are differences. Likewise, the villain, Tavington, is based on Banastre Tarleton, but again there are differences. I show this movie to 8th graders, but there are a few "R" scenes. I do think the "R" rating is harsh, though, because the violent scenes are not that bad. In class, I censor when Martin does some "tomahawk" work on the British, and also twice when cannon balls find their mark. Despite the blood, this is a great movie about history! Has some comedy and shows how horrible the war really was and how it tore families apart. A couple of GREAT action scenes and Mel does an excellent job of showing the rage a father would have. One of his best if not his top performance ever! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

I saw this and immediately thought of those posters of Kim Jong IL plastered all over Korea. This is flag-waving jingoism that panders to our patriotic sensibilities. The story was nonsense. The idea of lovable Mel and his merry band of farmers wreaking havoc with the redcoats while running from church-burning, child murdering dragoons is laughable drek. When Mel waves that big, tattered flag overhead in the sunlight you can almost hear grandpa weeping with glee and the lady down the aisle straightening her Stars-and-Bars lapel pin. I guess it achieved it's purpose, schlock script or not...as evidenced by the reviewer on the other page saying "I don't care who you are if you do not like this movie you are not part of this country". *snicker*.
