There was so much agony this family had to endure and to top it all off, it even ended that way. There was no silver lining, no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, so it left you feeling quite sad, but at the same time, quite appreciative of what we have today. Life is so much better than it was during the Depression era. Count your blessings! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Very good adaptation of the classic novel. However, due to the time in which the film was made (1940), the general public was not ready to witness the true nature of the book. The final scene in the novel, where Rosasharn breastfeeds the starving Okie is one of the most poignant and touching scenes in all of literature - yet it's omitted from the film. Great performances in this classic. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Henry Fonda's roll of "Tom Joad" is CLASSIC ! And his mother (Jane Darwell) steals the show with her superb portrail of a matriarch struggling to keep her migrant farmer family together, after being outsted from her Oklahoma farm. This movie shows the birth of migrant conditions in the early 20th century - and why unions were formed to help those workers who slaved for pennies on the day. Great movie ! Read More When adapting a book for film, it is inevitable that certain details are left out, which is perfectly fine. Generally, this film does a good job with Steinbeck's novel. As difficult as it is to watch such suffering and hardship, the reality is that the Dust Bowl was far, far worse. The closing pages of "The Grapes of Wrath" leave the Joad family in desperate straits, but the Hollywood directors chose to make the ending a bit more optimistic. This movie is absolutely classic and worth seeing, but don't forego the book, and you might want to read "The Worst Hard Time" for even more realistic accounts of this fascinating era.
