The story is put together very good and does not become depressing as you might imagine, due to the people she befriends along the way..

The story is about Novalee & Willie Jack. They head West together, until WJ abandons her at a WalMart. They part ways on more than one level - his life goes as low as it can, and her life rises beautifully. It's a study in contrasts, done impeccably in the novel, with complex characters to richen the journey - but it didn't translate.
Hollywood cut Benny completely out and shaved Moses down to a bit part while making Novalee's one-visit-mother a major player. They DESTROYED Forney - an eccentric, withdrawn, late-30s genius - turning him into a 20-something easy-going stud with a crooked smile. And Lexie - she's supposed to be a white-trashy size 22 w/4 kids, and they put ASHLEY JUDD in the role. Hello! Does that picture at the top look like a sz 22 w/4 kids and white trash tendencies to you?
Read the book. You'll be amazed at how inept Hollywood was at telling this story.

The ending was totally predictable, except the ex-boyfriend part. The way she treated the ex-boyfriend when she saw him again was very unrealistic.
