In this comedy, a middle-aged man juggles his problems with women, literature, and a career, while a younger man chases the artifact of his dreams. Pittsburgh college professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) is currently single following his divorce from his third wife; after publishing an acclaimed first novel, Grady has been working on a follow-up, but he's been sidelined by a severe case of writer's block. Grady has more than his writing career to think about; his affair with one of the (married) chancellors at the University of Pittsburgh (Frances McDormand), has resulted in her pregnancy, while Hannah (Katie Holmes), a student boarding at Grady's house, has developed a crush on him. While Grady is obsessed with his book, one of his students (Tobey Maguire) has an obsession of his own: finding a jacket once owned by Marilyn Monroe. Based on the novel by Michael Chabon, The Wonder Boys also features Robert Downey Jr., Rip Torn, and Richard Thomas. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Slow moving. No likeable characters. No morals. And of course, the homosexual angle has to be explored.

The acting showed real interaction with the problems. But like another reviewer asked, why is there always some homosexual content in movies? Did not expect that from the story as is progressed.

It wasn't horrible which isn't saying much. You just don't care about any of the characters and their 'struggles'. A few chuckles here and there but over all...meh.

I very much enjoyed the movie. I watched over the week of my birthday. a few girlfriends came over and I put it in for them. It is "ironically unexpected" all the way through. I great watch full of humor. Roll with the changes that come with life type of movie.

Wonder Boys is splendid film! Michael Douglas does a fabulous job portraying an aging, dope smoking, professor and author whose life is falling apart, bit by bit. Robert Downey, Jr. is also hysterical as Douglas' literary agent who plays too hard and makes a date with a transvestite on his way to see Douglas. This film is wonderfully acted and a treat to watch.

Disjointed, long and boring despite big-name stars. To be avoided.

Well inasmuch as some film school kids will think this was a masterpiece, it really wasn't. You really had to believe a bunch of events that are so random and outrageous would actually happen and they wouldn't. I guess it's really edgy because weed and homosexuality are subject matter and in the end it's all buttoned up in a nice little hollywood package for you and everyone lives happily ever after. Really trite and not pushing any sort of boundaries at all. But hey, Michael Douglas is in it. Rent Dead Poets Society for something really different and executed properly

With a killer cast I was expecting much better. There is intelligent humor. It has some parts that are engaging but for the most part it was not engaging. Just when you think it's starting to pick up steam and start to go somewhere, they hit the release valve and lose all momentum. You may enjoy it since it isn't without some merit. But it isn't a sure fire hit by any stretch. Renter beware.

Like most good movies, this is immaculately cast. Michael Douglas displays his great comic timing with an excellent adaptation of the book from screenwriter Steve Kloves ("The Fabulous Baker Boys"). People say that "they don't make them like this anymore" but they do, and this is one.

although I enjoyed it, it was hard to follow. a little unbelievable, with the drug use. Douglas has played better roles.

My wife and I first saw Wonder Boys in 2000, when it was released. We thought it was really well done - good story line, well acted. We recently (2010) saw it again, and we both found it ... well, annoying. We thought the story to be silly, the acting amateurish, the constant drug use by "smart" university people a bad thing. What really angered us was the fact that the lead character (Douglas) facilitated the theft of a valuable, cherished item from a colleague, and then when he has a chance to recover it and return it to its rightful owner, he allows the thief to simply walk away with it. in 10 years we went from 4 stars to one -- zero stars if we could go that low.
