Read More Magnolia is a complex, stimulating, and emotionally profound film -- one of the most stunning I've seen. Don't see it if you're just looking for a feel-good Hollywood movie. PT Anderson did an amazing job with this movie, too bad some people hate it because they cannot understand the plot. Just a great movie. Read More Leave it to Paul Thomas Anderson. I've never watched so many movies by one director who can draw me into a story and characters so strongly, only to have him take a sharp left turn in the final act, leaving me scratching my head. He has such a talent for framing shots and squeezing buckets of emotion out his actors, only to tip the buckets over and end his films in some of the most unconventional ways possible. Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood all have a very distinct Anderson stamp throughout and Magnolia is no exception. It's super high in quality, with some really, REALLY awesome work from actors like John C. Reilly, Julianne Moore, and especially Tom Cruise, and some really memorable scenes of dialog, just be ready for Mr. Anderson's eventual hard curve ball when it comes to wrapping the whole thing up...and bring an umbrella. I would have enjoyed watching flies zip around our living room more than this movie! What a piece of nonsense....trash. There was enough vulgarity to edit at least 1 hour out of the "story". Read More Before watching this movie, I had no idea what it was about. I knew that it was similar to crash and babel, where different stories that are all related are shown, but I was a little skeptical, especially considering that this is a 3-hour movie. After watching it, I got to say I was very pleased and surprised at how good this movie is. The cast is awesome - Tom Cruise, Julianne more, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc. The stories are touching and interesting and complex, ranging from love, loneliness, depression, forgiveness, regrets, and faith (or chance). Once you start watching, you wont feel the length of the movie, you actually wished that it was a little longer, to see what happens where the characters go from here. I had heard the "artsy" tag, and didn't have much interest. I would walk by, pick it up, look at it and proceed to place it back on the shelf.
I finally saw it when it was on cable, and enjoyed it very much. For the length of the movie, I was not bored in the least. Very clever writing, and kept my interest for the duration. Good performances. From reading all of the reviews and much discussion on trivia, plot twists and meanings, it seems like it has done a good job at getting people to talk about it.
