The members of a British working-class family see their lives starting to come apart as the Nation prepares to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day (named for an anarchist who tried to blow up Parliament) in Michael Winterbottom's drama Wonderland. Eileen (Kika Markham) and Bill (Jack Shepherd) are a married couple with four grown children. Bill has lost his job and is drifting through life, unsure of what to do. He's also having sexual problems with Eileen, who is being driven insane by their noisy neighbors. Neither Bill nor Eileen have seen their son Darren (Enzo Cilenti) for a long time, and his birthday is a heartbreaking experience for them. (Darren, on the other hand, would prefer to celebrate his birthday by spending the night in a hotel with his girlfriend rather than seeing his parents.) Bill and Eileen also have three daughters, Nadia (Gina McKee), Debbie (Shirley Henderson) and Molly (Molly Parker). Nadia works in a cafe and has trouble meeting men; she's signed up with a dating agency, but has yet to meet anyone she likes. Debbie is suddenly a single mother after separating from her drunken lout of a husband. Debbie drowns her sorrows in a series of meaningless one-night-stands, while her husband flies into uncontrollable rages and their son is left with no one to turn to on either side. And while Molly's story seems happy on the surface -- she's soon to give birth to her first child and her husband has done well in kitchen sales -- she's suddenly thrown into instability when she finds her husband has quit his job, without telling her, to follow his dream of becoming a chef. Wonderland received enthusiastic reviews for its ensemble cast when shown at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Well, I didn't necessarily think this movie was boring like the other reviewers but it was a little hard to understand the English accents. Also, Gina McKee who I loved in the Forsyte Saga has to get an award for the worst "Olyve Oil" hairdo I have ever seen!! Some of the sub plots were a little unecessary. The little boy was great.

This movie is definitely not something to watch if you are depressed about your own life. Unfortunately it shows people making the mistake of just surviving life instead of going out and living it. They did a good job of portraying that though. Very slow moving. Could have gotten that point across in half the time.

If you have read the synopsis that Blockbuster provides, you have seen this movie . There was nothing resolved: you dont see Molly's husband make any attempts on starting his career as a chef, you will never know what has become of Nadia's relationship, Franklyn was still an ungrateful brat festering under his mother's roof, and forget about seeing anything further happening with these people's parents. It's another unfinished movie that does a great job establishing their characters, but goes absolutely nowhere.

If you think your life is dull, boring and aimless, without hope of improvement, this movie will show you that things could be worse. I cannot imagine how anyone could recommend wasting time watching it.

This begins a little slowly and is ever so depressing. Reminded me of the Beatles song, "Eleanor Rigby" - 'oh look at all the lonely people!' But things picked up and started to mesh about half way through, and by the end I was very happy I hung in there. Working class family and friends in London - all lonely or sad for various reasons, all acting out in that in various ways and are portrayed in little sort of snap-shot vinettes - very up close and personal. The resilancy of the human spirit is a wonder indeed. I struggled with this at first - but in the end I liked it.

I didn't know the Brits were that depressed.

Somewhat pointless and with too many plots, but I liked it. Gina McKee was very good.

Frankly I couldn't manage to watch over 45 minutes. Didn't care about the people, no discernable plot, no connection with any of the bland characters. Forget about it.

It sounded like an interesting movie but the DVD didn't work.
