Pedro Almodóvar directed this story of a woman and her circle of friends who find themselves suffering a variety of emotional crises. Manuela (Cecilia Roth) is a single mother who has raised her son, Esteban (Eloy Azorín), to adulthood on her own and has come to emotionally depend on him. One night, Manuela and Esteban take in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire; after the show, Esteban is struck and killed by a passing motorist as he dashes into the street to get an autograph from Huma Rojo (Marisa Paredes), who played Blanche. Emotionally devastated, Manuela relocates to Barcelona in hopes of finding her ex-husband (and Esteban's father), who is now working as a female impersonator. Manuela becomes reacquainted with old friend La Agrado (Antonia San Juan), a transsexual, and is introduced to Sister Rosa (Penélope Cruz), a good-hearted nun who has to contend with her considerably more cynical mother (Rosa María Sardà). While looking for work, Manuela becomes acquainted with Huma Rojo. Huma, on the other hand, has troubles of her own, most involving her drug-addicted significant other, Nina (Candela Peña). Displaying Almodóvar's trademark visual style and a unusually strong sense of character-driven drama, Todo Sobre Mi Madre/All About My Mother received a highly anticipated theatrical run in Spain before winning the Best Director award at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival; in 2000, Almodóvar would receive the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Simply a beautiful movie. You soon learn past the flaws of the characters and realize them for the people that they are. The plot is tight without any flaws and the acting is superb. On top of it all, the cinematography is superb. I highly recommend it if you enjoy movies without loud bangs.

Yes, like all Pedro Almodóvar films, it's slow, but that's 'cuz he likes you to spend time with the characters and the events that shape their lives. Yes - the film is in Spanish and you may need to read the sub-titles while you polish your language skills, but the film is worth it. A sweet, sad story, with complex characters and convoluted back stories. It's not a happy story. It's about surviving life, some make it, some don't. This movie takes you out of your world and into theirs. That makes it a big success. Take the time to see the world.

Manuela is the kind of loving, caring person that everyone should have in their life. Estaban's death was sad but it showed how one person can affect others long after departing this life. It was a beautiful story. I really like Almdovar's films.

Love Pedro Almodovar. Such intriguing characters and stories. These movies are so great because they dont fall into the same ole hollywood genere of movies. Cinematography is excellent, feast for the eyes. Highly recommend this movie!

The movie tried to shock and surprise, but maybe having lived in LA all my life I just wasn't all that intrigued. Besides, too far-fetched for me to buy into.

This one hurts. Not being a parent, but being the son of one, and very close I might add, and watching him taken away and the grief his mother endures and deals with, I can only say this: the tears will fall.

Love Pedro Almodovar movies, but this wasn't his best. We were not shocked or put off by the content, but just as many we found slow and the story trite.

Too many others problems going on when this came in. I just couldn't do the required reading to stay involved. I gave it a stinker because how many movies do the US put out a year compared to the rest of the world? Slap some English schlep on it so I can ease my brain and just veg out.

My favorite Almodovar film to this date. He finally combines the best of his older, absurdist films, with his new found maturity and real emotion. A woman’s son dies, while trying to get an autograph from a great actress, leaving his mother bereft, and trying to start a new life. I won't give away any details, but her journey is both funny and tragic, and leads to some terrifically unexpected places. Full of odd and wonderful characters, and some very strong acting. A bit cute or forced in a few moments, but overall a moving, special and wonderful film.

Directed by Spain's Pedro Almodovar. This is the story of a son & a mother who share love of the Theater. He will die on his 17th birthday. She promised to reveal the name of his father. The title contains the subtle irony, that since he grew up by her side, he already knows all he needs to know about her. But, does he, know her? Almodovar is a man of many passions. He loves the American Theater, movies, especially powerful, strong women such as Bette Davis's Margo in ”All About Eve”. Or Stella and her violent husband, Stanley Kowalki's, in ”A Streetcar Named Desire?” I have seen most of his films and enjoyed them all. He is an acquired taste for those who love Spain, its people, culture, warts & all. Enjoy the music, listen to the talk, at times perfect Spanish, picaresque or gross & loud; depending of Class, but hardly threatening. There is the intolerant religiosity, retribution, forgiveness, redemption and boundless Love. Come and enjoy it all.
