Read More Made in the late 50's, Gigi is a little different than the classic musicals one thinks of when they think of classic musicals. There are no big dance numbers and the vocals aren't spectacular. What Gigi does offer is great personalities, wonderful costumes, and great songs. I will admit, I really disliked this film the first time I watched it. The plot itself rather disturbed me; however, I fell in love with this film the more I watched it. Gigi is now one of my most watched dvds in my dvd library. So don't be put off by the plot, this movie is very good. Just look at all the Oscars it won. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? It had the right cover, correct menu page, correct extras, but the actual film was a different version of Gigi (older, b&w, with subtitles). I don't know what could have happened for it to end up that way, but I've seen the 1958 version of Gigi, and what played on the disk was not it. All the characters were delightful. It was refreshing that even after recieving lessons, seeing all the corrupt morals surrounding her, and being offered a prime position as mistress, Gigi had the inner self esteem to say no. Lokk at the people involved- Leslie Caron, Louis Jordan, Hermione Gingold and Maurice Chevalier. Vincent Minelli (Liza's dad) directed. Read More Not bad, sorta represents the death of the spectacle MGM musical. Caron, Jourdain, and Chevalier are perfect for their parts - it's a shame that the plot bastardizes the message of the Colette's story. Lerner and Loewe's tunes are great. Too bad the ending is hurried and awkward, mired in 1950's cliches. I haven't been this creeped out since Gary Cooper hooked up with Audrey Hepburn at the end of Love in the Afternoon (with Chevalier in tow, no less). Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
