What's it like being the only punk rockers in the biggest Mormon community in the world? Stevo (Matthew Lillard) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) provide the answer to this and other questions in SLC Punk. Stevo and Bob (whose name is actually an ironic reference to his fear of needles) are two friends fresh out of college who sport mohawks and blue hair, listen to hardcore and try to live up to their own anarchist ideals while figuring out what to do with their lives. Which wouldn't make them unusual in New York or Los Angeles, but they're fish out of water in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they drink beer, chase women and pick fights with "rednecks" along side a mixed bag of metalheads, hippies, hicks and posers who are fellow outcasts in the most clean-cut community in America. In the midst of all this, Stevo's dad hopes his son will follow in his footsteps and study law at Harvard; while Stevo surprisingly has the grades, he's not sure if he wants to go. Featuring a soundtrack of mid-80's punk from The Ramones, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys and others, SLC Punk was chosen as the opening-night feature at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I thought the movie did of good job of portraying this era in a realistic way. The archetypal personality types of the beautiful and wise punk woman, the slightly paranoid but loyal punk guy, and the intelligent punk dude who is rebelling against his wealthy parents and their "sell out" lifestyle are reflected well against the restrictive religious scene of Salt Lake City. I liked the narration the main character did within the story, adding commentary and explanations as the plot unfolded. If you were a part of this era at all, or you've lived in Salt Lake City, it's definitely worth a rental.

Authentic, which is rare when it comes to movies with punks in it.

It's everybodies story, shown through the punk culture. Trying to finding yourself and losing freinds on the way. The director to care in creating 'the scene'(having been apart of it)and the actors do their job well. I love this movie. "Anarchy in the U.K."

of any movie ever centered around the stupid antics of punks, the often asked question of: is an anarchist's life a possible or intelligent life to lead, gets an answer that i loved. i found the dialogue to be very intelligent, and the movie is really funny. if you have always loved the idea of wearing a tie to work, this might not be your movie. but, if you have ever questioned what should be "normal" this movie is great!

The first 12 minutes or so the film meanders. Stevo's voice over rants dialogue you won't remember. Then when he has a meeting with his parents the plot begins to form. Cool music and partying ensues. Then a lull when they hang out with Mark (skip over those chapters). Back to the story about a dude who wants to be a rebel but really isn't. It's the best delusion designed to get yourself into creating your own scene. Jason Segel shows us that he can BE a character (not what he's doing nowadays). Chris McDonald rocks his part. And Brandy is so lovely. Those eyes are something else. The film is the last of the 90s indie scene and attempts to use every style and cliche of the decade... with a eensy bit of Repo Man for good chaos. But there is a story there it just needed to be better edited. And they had trouble getting downtown SLC to look like 1985. Funny thing: I rented this in 2000 and didn't remember 'til the end of the film. Weird, huh?

This is a stupid movie, seemingly made as an excuse for bad language and behavior. Poor dialogue, poor techniques, and even worse plot. Pass this piece of garbage by if at all possible.
