The athletic Buster Keaton definitely shines in this movie. If you can put yourself in the year 1927, when women probably had no idea of being a train engineer (and wouldn't be offended by the humor), then this is absolutely a treat for any viewer. The stunts being real are another aspect on top of the humor that make this great. Not to discredit the stunt doubles we have today, I'm more or less referencing the trains and all of that. Last, a movie celebrating a southern civil war victory adds quite a twist, and I imagine in it's time caused quite a stir. Enjoy! Close this ReviewWAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

This is still one of the best. Best scene? When Keaton hands his girl friend the twig to stoke the fire. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

Read MoreAfter several Buster Keaton films, during which my 10-yr son & I laughed our sides out, I can safely say this is his finest ! Keaton, the best physical comedian of his time & ours, first in line before Lucy, Burnett, Chevy Chase, etc. is not only a master of the craft, but a brilliant storyteller. With The General, he tells a story wherein the protagonist is from the Civil War South. Each of the pratfalls is cleverly designed and brilliantly executed. Keaton's doleful look and brightened by his adoration of the sweet Annabelle. A love story, a war battle, a train tale - it has it all! I say keep this film up in the top 10 of the American Films best 100 (it is currently 15) and enjoy this wonderful film and it's masterful comedian. Close this ReviewWAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

What a surprise to find that Kino has re-packaged "The General" with the wonderful score by Carl Davis.
Until now the Carl Davis score was only available (but long out of print) on the "Rohauer version" on VHS and on an obscure DVD out of the UK. During this time the Kino DVD version had a respectable piano score (I think by Robert Israel).
Let me tell you, the Carl Davis score makes an already great movie even better. Like the great movie composer John Williams, Davis creates "themes" for each character (including the locomotive!) that weave in and out during the story. Pay attention to the music and you will see what I mean.
Now, please Kino, release Keaton's "Our Hospitatlity" on DVD with it's Carl Davis score. Another (somewhat forgotten) masterpiece that was given the Davis treatment but was only available on VHS (and out of print as well). WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

The General (1927) is a sexist and a racist movie. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes
