The General (1927) Reviews

The General (1927)
Member Rating:
Buster Keaton plays Johnny Gray, a Southern railroad engineer who loves his train engine, The General, almost as much as he loves Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack). When the opening shots of the Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter, Johnny tries to enlist -- and he is deemed too useful as an engineer to be a soldier. All Johnny knows is that he's been rejected, and Annabelle, thinking him a coward, turns her back on him. When Northern spies steal the General (and, unwittingly, Annabelle), the story switches from drama and romance to adventure mixed with Keaton's trademark deadpan humor as he uses every means possible to catch up to the General, thwart the Yankees, and rescue his darling Annabelle -- for starters. As always, Keaton performs his own stunts, combining his prodigious dexterity, impeccable comic timing, and expressive body language to convey more emotion than the stars of any of the talkies that were soon to dominate cinema. ~ Emru Townsend, Rovi

This movie is hilarious! I expected something cheesy and outdated, however I laughed out loud at least 10 times. The athletic Buster Keaton definitely shines in this movie. If you can put yourself in the year 1927, when women probably had no idea of being a train engineer (and wouldn't be offended by the humor), then this is absolutely a treat for any viewer. The stunts being real are another aspect on top of the humor that make this great. Not to discredit the stunt doubles we have today, I'm more or less referencing the trains and all of that. Last, a movie celebrating a southern civil war victory adds quite a twist, and I imagine in it's time caused quite a stir. Enjoy!

This is still one of the best. Best scene? When Keaton hands his girl friend the twig to stoke the fire.

This movie will be funny 100 years from now. It's interesting to watch, well written and and the gags are perfectly timed.

Still funny, and the stunts are very real. I haven't seen a young Buster Keaton before for some reason he was always a sad faced older gent, doing funny things. What a wonderful classic way to spend a great evening of laughter.

The "General" was humorous, a bit long at the end but worth watching. Good sight gags. The unexpected plus was the dvd we received also included Keaton's short films "The Playhouse" and "Cops".

I'm glad this is the first silent movie I got to see. Buster Keaton was an amazing actor, and did great in this film. Very hilarious and excellent use of slapstick. Highly recomended to any movie buff, especially the ones who love silent and old school movies.

One of the most amazing movies ever. Incredible athletic feats by Keaton; have you ever tried to run over a pile of firewood or over railroad tracks? Non-stop laughs and astonishing action from first to last frame.

Pretty funny. In many cases the comedy seems a little more funny when the comedian uses expressions and body language (sight gags) rather than saying something funny. Plus the storyline makes this a rather interesting film that should last as long as people can accept great silent movies standing up to modern day flicks. Highly recommended.

The General (1927) is a sexist and a racist movie.
