The Thin Blue Line [TV Series] (1995) Reviews

The Thin Blue Line [TV Series] (1995)
Member Rating:
Rowan Atkinson of Mr. Bean fame was the star of the BBC sitcom The Thin Blue Line. The setting was the tiny British town of Gasforth, where a squad of dedicated, but basically inept police officers held sway. Atkinson was cast as Inspector Raymond Fowler, whose self-absorption was matched by his clumsiness. Other members of the squad included Raymond's former live-in lover Sgt. Patricia Dawkins, chronically depressed Detective Inspector Grim, Constable Maggie Habib, and Constables Kevin Goody and Frank Gladstone. During the second season, two new characters were added to the mixture: Mayoress Wickerham, whose efforts at imposing "political correctness" at all costs only served to make bad situations worse, and CID Detective Boyle, whose efforts to work hand and glove with the squad usually resulted in botched arrests and public relations disasters. All of the episodes were directed by Atkinson's former Mr. Bean colleague John Birkin. Written and co-produced by Ben Elton, who admittedly patterned the program after the classic British comedy-ensemble series Dad's Army, The Thin Blue Line yielded 14 half-hour episodes between November 13, 1995, and December 23, 1996. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I agree with Sally H. in that this is a very worthwhile funny series. Rowan Atkinson is superb and he is supported by a strong comic cast and very good writing (Ben Elton).

As huge fan of all things Rowan Atkinson, I was surprised that he was often times not the scene stealer in this series. That honor goes to James Dreyfus as PC Kevin Goody. Funny, funny. A very good series that I was sad to see go. I can't think of an American equivalent to The Thin Blue LIne. It stands alone in it's clever delivery, plotlines, and morality. (Yes, the Gasforth PD are quite ethical!)

I loved this series. If you liked Blackadder you'll like this one with the characters' witty humor, play on words and generally ridiculous situations. However, be aware that disc three consists of some interviews which weren't that great and a few trailers not even of the show.

Third Disc is ONLY extra material, so be sure to delete it from Queue if you don't want to waste time w/ writer interviews, et al. Comedy is superb! Get accustomed to the accent & rewind a few times - the laughs are frequent and easy! Silly characters in sometimes real-life situations will elicit sincere chuckles from almost any viewer.

I agree with the other two reviewers. This a great BBC comedy. If you like Rowan Atkinson's other stuff you should like this. If you have never seen his stuff before you should give it a try.

Excellent BritCom. Rowan Atkinson is always full of win, and there are a bunch of other fun people as well. Maybe not quite as good as BlackAdder, but still highly enjoyable and well worth watching. If you're renting though, don't bother getting the third disc, it only has interviews and commentaries, stuff like that.

The series (Discs 1 and 2) is wonderful. However, "Disc 3 -The Complete Lineup" is NOT the Thin Blue Line comedy series, but instead only a short documentary about the writers. Very misleading!
