And Ford here has not yet developed his film persona, though we see aspects of it in the film. Wilder's performance as an Orthodox rabbi trying to get from Poland to San Francisco made me laugh frequently and -- suprisingly -- made me cry a few times. He's optimistic and honest, gentle but firm. See if you don't tear up when Gene says, "You're my best friend" and Ford replies, "I never had a best friend before." Watch for a terrifric theological debate between the rabbi and an open-minded Indian chief, who takes such pleasure in peoples' joy. The film is uneven at times (just how long does the trip take them, anyway? and where do they go?), perhaps like this review. But check it out, and you might find yourself screaming "Oy Gevaaaaaaaaaalt" next time you jump off a cliff. . . Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Funny, well-acted and great set designs make this a solid movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This film has everything...humor, action, suspense, even a few poignant moments. Gene Wilder is wonderful as a Polish rabbi emigrating to America, facing the dangers and obstacles of a cross-country trek to California, and a very young Harrison Ford is quite amusing as the cowboy who protects and befriends him. Plus, it was fine for my 9 and 10 year old children--a little violence, but not so graphic or intense. In fact, my kids laughed just as much as I did! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More I loved this movie when I saw it when it first came out, and I think I loved it even more this time around. Gene Wilder's timing is perfect, and his performance is perfectly nuanced and subtle, even. My only problem with the movie is that the rating is "PG." Well, I watched it with my twin 9 year-olds, and since it had been so long since I'd seen it the first time, I'd forgotten about the adult language. I'm not sure if PG now is very different than PG was back in the late 70s, or if this rating was an error. Either way, I had some 'splainin' to do. In any event, I'm proud to report that my kids laughed all through the movie, and they now declare it to be one of their favorite movies. What brilliant children I have!
