first of all it was very anti-climatic and had a really bad ending, but it you're looking for a good middle-of-the-night, spooky tale this is a good one WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

Great movie. A must see for anyone that loves the horror genre. Nothing gory, but scares and a creepy house. Has some slow moments but those can easily be overlooked. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

First of all, Ron Defoe is a real mass-murderer who killed his entire family as they slept. The Lutz's are also real people, though their story has long been exposed to be a hoax; George Lutz himself swore under oath in a court of law that crucial aspects of the story were fabricated.
As for the movie itself, meh. It's got pretty much every cliche a haunted house movie could have. The acting goes from being hokey one minute to just plain hollow the next. The one good thing I can say is the music score is downright creepy.
Overall, avoid this like the plague. It's not one of those so-bad-it's-good movies, nor is it even good for a cheap laugh. For some reason people seem to like this movie. I guess people just want to believe sensational stories like this are true, regardless of how many times someone demonstrates it to be a hoax. If the movie made clear that it was fiction, perhaps people would see this for what it really is; uninspired garbage.
