anywhere Jack goes in this movie he is depressed, his girlfriend is shallow, needy, ditzy, and very stupid. but he can't seem to leave her. he has trouble expressing himself and feels isolated from society. he treats her like crap because he doesn't care about her. when he goes home to his family he is turned off by their upperclass shallowness and snoody-ness, anywhere he goes, he can't find what he is looking for, it ends with a subtle but powerful ending where his girlfriend and him stop at a gas station to get some food, while she is in the store, he goes to the bathroom and looks in the mirror and examines himself, you will have to rent it to see what he finally does.

This is a great movie. The trailer is absolutely awful. Pay it no mind. The naysayers are correct pointing out that the movie has a sort of missing plot. Don't be fooled by these short sighted criticisms; the movie is handling some weighty issues and Nicholson and the "plot" handle them excellently.
