The Firm (1993) Reviews

The Firm (1993)
Member Rating:
In this drama, based on the best-selling novel by John Grisham, Mitch McDeer (Tom Cruise) is a young man from a poor Southern family who has struggled through Harvard Law School to graduate fifth in his class. Mitch is entertaining offers from major firms in New York and Chicago, but when Memphis-based Bendini, Lambert, & Locke offer him a 20 percent higher salary than the best offer he's received, in addition to an enticing variety of perks and fringe benefits, he decides to sign on and remain in the South. Mitch's wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn), warns him that the deal sounds almost too good to be true, but it's not until after several weeks of working with Avery Tolar (Gene Hackman) that Mitch discovers that the vast majority of BL&L's business is tied to organized crime, with crime boss Joey Morolto (Paul Sorvino) using the firm to launder Mafia money. FBI agents Wayne Tarrance (Ed Harris) and F. Denton Voyles (Steven Hill) try to blackmail Mitch into helping them make a case against the firm, while BL&L's "security director" William Devasher (Wilford Brimley) is blackmailing him to do as he's told after Mitch foolishly allows himself to be seduced by a prostitute hired by the firm. The Firm was adapted for the screen by acclaimed playwright David Rabe and features performances by Hal Holbrook, Holly Hunter, and Gary Busey. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A exciting movie that keeps you in place so you don't miss a thing.... thank goodness for the pause button. If you missed this one from all those years ago... make up for that mistake today. :)

Based on Grisham's novel of the same name, this movie is pretty good. The first half of the movie follows the book pretty well, but it deviates in the second half which is always a little disappointing. Good acting though.

The film was very well done. Tom Cruise is magnificent in this film. Started out kind of slow. The excitement grew as the movie went on. I would give this movie a 4 star rating. I would watch it again.

I'm a pretty big fan of legal thrillers. I don't know why - I just find them interesting. This one, featuring Tom Cruise pre-crazy, looked like it showed promise. Heck, about half of it was downright great. But there are a few factors that made it fall far down the list of my preferred movies. Biggest of all was the soundtrack. Ugh, it's terrible, so much so that it started to distract from the film. A solo piano is not good for conveying suspense, unless it's used with a lot of echo in a horror film. If you want to see Tom Cruise play a half-decent lawyer in a much-better film, go see A Few Good Men. This one is too long and too disappointing. (P.S. It does feature Wilford Brimley. It was interesting to see him on my TV without selling diabetes supplies. Sorry, I mean diabet-US supplies)

this was a pretty good movie, not a great movie...certainly not a keeper. The soundtrack took something away from this flick. Dave Grusin is best utilitzed in the jazz music format or in light-hearted romance/comedy movie fares...not serious dramas. Pay attention to how bizzare Grusin's smooth jazz - ivory-tickling licks contrast w/the seriousness of the various scenes they are matched with...it annoyed the heck out of me.

I LOVED this movie !! GREAT script - the action and tension builds slowly but steadily. Tom Cruise (who I cannot stand in real life !!) was outstanding in this movie !! Wonderful story line - just SUPERB !

If it was not for my husband, I would not have seen this movie. I am definitely not a Tom Cruise fan. But I did enjoy this movie. There are not many movies I have seen with Gene Hackman that I have not liked. He is a seasoned actor, star quality. Each character in this movie, you will either love, like or hate, which is meant to be. To me Tom Cruise can play these parts because he is arrogant in real life so these parts are perfect for him. See the movie, you will enjoy it.

I didn't like the fact that his character cheated on his wife but besides that the movie was a good one.

a really good, fast-paced and thoroughly absorbing movie. tom cruise's robotic acting suits this role well because he needed to run a lot. gene hackman showed to be a veteran actor with his usual understated acting. seldomly a movie is anywhere close to the book, especially a good book from a great writer as john grisham, but this one came pretty close. highly recommended!!
