I found it to be one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen. What's even more - and you need to keep this in mind while you are watching, this is a true story. I can't imagine having lived in those days - where marriage was a politcal ploy for status and position and where love was dismissed. See this movie, you will not be disappointed. Bad acting, bad dialogue, cheap-looking costumes and sets. Something for everyone, basically porn for the guys and fluffy romance for the girls. I expected a fun and intelligent movie. Bitter I wasted my time. I had higher expectations. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Beautiful scenery, great costumes, excellent cast with terrific chemistry between McCormick and Sewell. All this plus an intriging story with a plausible ending. Tittillating sex scenes as well as some very funny poetry. If you love period pieces, (Valmont, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tudors) then you may very well love this movie too. Read More I was a little bored with this movie and I rolled my eyes so many times. I don't know the history of courtesans in Venice but I think there were many parts of the story that made me do a double take. I know there is some accuracy but perhaps the simple delivery of the story was what made it seem so outlandish at times. The court scene ending was ridiculous and completely unbelievable. Some of the puns and bits of dialogue were too modern for my taste. The romance was gag-worthy. This story definitely had potential but would have been a good movie under someone else's direction and screen writing. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Think of 16th century Europe where women are property and marriages are based on strenghtening family ties and power. The only way a woman can do more than manage the household slaves is to be a courtesan, and Veronica Franco succeeded. The movie includes ambition, mediocrities jealous of success, religion, a man who intends to live on the success of others, and other interesting characters. What a variety! Read More I have to get past the opening scene the first time to be able to watch this movie -which I did with great enjoyment. Catherine McCormack plays the 16th century Venetian courtesan Veronica Franco with passion, creating curiosity, sympathy and compassion for these women who were so powerful -and so vulnerable. I can't understand why the studio buried this gem! This movie is filled with wonderful images of Venice, amazing costuming and a great cast. This portrayal of men and women in 18th century Venice that can still challenge our understanding of sexuality and gender. Watch this movie, the whole movie -then watch the opening sequence again. You can hear Veronica Franco, the poet Franco's pathos and compassion for her city and her sisters. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
