Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery (1997)
Member Rating:
This Ken Burns documentary, narrated by Hal Holbrook, chronologically traces the well-documented 1804-06 military expedition of Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and Lt. William Clark (1770-1838) to survey newly acquired lands and seek a Northwest Passage. Ordered by Thomas Jefferson (who labeled it the Corps of Discovery), the expedition was approved by Congress in 1803, and several dozen men were trained in Illinois in the winter of 1803-04. On May 14, 1804, the explorers departed from St. Louis, heading up the Missouri River by keelboat and continuing westward over the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific. Ken Burns spent almost four years on this project, retracing the route with cameras capturing mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and forests at the same time of year as first seen by Lewis and Clark. Traditional and Native American music provides an accompaniment to the grandeur of these vast vistas, while Stephen Ambrose and other historians offer illuminating anecdotes. Paintings and maps are intercut, but unlike other Burns documentaries, few archival photos are included (since photography was not invented until decades later). Reenactments, seen at a distance, are also kept at a bare minimum. The four-hour film premiered as a PBS two-parter on November 4-5, 1997. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I love Ken Burns' documentaries. They just have a look and sound about them that makes history come alive. What a passion for getting as right as he can.

I have to agree with Dave. The disc only included the first 2 hours of the 4 hour documentary. Advised Blockbuster and sent it back. Hopefully, they will correct this.

As noted by other reviewers, Blockbuster doesn't have the 2nd half of this excellent documentary and can't seem to get their act together to simply buy a few more copies. I spent 6 weeks sending them emails about this, and only got frustration. Finally, I subscribed to NetFlix and got the 2nd disk from them. Now that I'm exploring both services, I have to say that NetFlix is superior to Blockbuster, and worth the extra money. Their site is easier to navigate and, not living in a major city, I get my movies faster. Blockbuster's customer service is very poor as I learned by renting this title.

I have tried and tried to get through to Blockbuster's customer service to tell them that they are missing disc 2. Nobody is home. Doesn't anybody from customer service read the email or read these comments. Between this and other problems, I'm about to switch back to Netflix...

Very frustrating to watch the first two hours of a fabulous, engrossing documentary, then not be able to finish it! Get with it Blockbuster! It says Disc 1 on the DVD! Where is Disc 2?

This is supposed to be a two disc set but Blockbuster only has the first disc available with no way to recieve the complete documentary.

Excelent documentary, BUT where would we be today if Lewis & Clark would have stopped at the Rocky Mtns? Apperantly that's what Blockbuster would have us believe. C'mon guys, release the second disc. Pleeease!

Was very happy with my two week trial until I rented this thinking I was getting the entire show. Nope. Only half. Too bad I didn't read the other reviews here before I wasted my time. Sadly I have cancelled my membership and will look elsewhere (i.e. Netflix) for the rest of this fine series.

The description of the movie says 4 hours but mine ended after two hours and I wondered how to get second disc. By reading these prior comments, it's clear that Blockbuster really doesn't pay attention to customer service! Incredible. Anyway, this is a documentary with the requisite PBS way of making boring what in reality is an incredible trip. I don't know why people like PBS so much. It's like a college professor who is a historian who doesn't know how to write and make his subject interesting. Ken Burns is overrated.
